Born in Sweetwater, TX, Jay Dade (Missouri ‘83) did a fair share of moving with his family before graduating from high school in the Kansas City, MO area.
Jay enrolled at the University of Missouri-Columbia (Mizzou) in the fall of 1982 to study Journalism. He sped through school and earned a B.J. (Magazine Sequence) in the summer of 1985.
While at Mizzou, he was involved in a variety of activities. He joined the Beta Beta Chapter after participating in the recruitment process. The chapter had 65-70 members and was a healthy chapter, and he served as treasurer and Little Sisters chairman. In addition to Delta Sig, Jay was the Associate Editor of the University yearbook staff.
After graduating from Mizzou, Jay moved to Atlanta and enrolled in a design school where he soon realized that his education at Mizzou was far superior to his cohorts at the design school. Jay had several jobs while in Atlanta. He started as the Associate Editor of Pension World (trade magazine for financial professionals) before receiving an offer from the Technical Association of the Pulp & Paper Industry. Soon, Jay thought about going back to school and, ultimately, enrolled in law school at Mizzou in 1990. It was there he served as House Director for the Beta Beta Chapter and earned his J.D. in the Spring of 1993.
Following law school, Jay married his wife Christie, and moved to Springfield, MO to practice labor and employment law. He and his family have moved a few times and now reside in Rogersville, MO, just 12 miles east of Springfield. Jay serves as Of Counsel for the law firm of Shughart, Thomson, & Kilroy, P.C.. In addition to his educational professional careers, Jay still found time to volunteer for Beta Beta. He served on the chapter’s ACB from 1990-2002.
One accomplishment Jay is very proud of is that he currently serves as President of the MU Alumni Association, which has more than 37,500 members. He represents the alumni association in a variety of capacities. The alumni association serves the best interests and traditions of MU and seeks to be the best resource for the University and its members.
Jay believes the Fraternity helped him tremendously. “I am fully convinced that a support group is needed when a student attends a campus like Mizzou,” Jay noted. Delta Sig gave him a group of guys that knew him, and the opportunity to further develop his leadership skills. Being an alumnus of not only Mizzou, but of the Beta Beta Chapter, gave him more of a tie-in to the University.
One of Jay’s most fond Delta Sig memories is initiating his father as a Delta Sig in 1992. He recalls his father’s initiation ceremony to this day, which makes him proud that he and his dad share the bonds many Delta Sigs have experienced.
His advice to Delta Sig undergraduates is to get involved in your chapter, and something else in the campus community. Take advantage of what your university has to offer. Four years of college go by quick – make the most of them.
Jay and his wife Christie have two children (Christopher & Caroline) and reside in Rogersville, MO.
