Leadership Institute Application Now Available

Formerly known as The College of Engineered Leadership, The Leadership Institute (LI) is our Fraternity’s flagship leadership development offering. A five-day, intense training and development institute, the LI has graduated more than 600 brothers since its inception in 1993, and over 50% of those give back to the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation.

The number of applicants continues to grow each year making it more and more competitive to secure a spot. The estimated cost per attendee is $1000. Participants bear no expense for their attendance, thanks to loyal Delta Sigma Phi alumni who realize the benefit the Leadership Institute can make in a young brother’s collegiate years and beyond. Generous gifts from alumni make possible what would otherwise be impossible for most young Delta Sigs.

Fraternity Seeks Director of Volunteer Development

The Director of Volunteer Development will lead and manage organizational efforts to recruit, train and engage volunteers consistent with the Fraternity’s Vision 2025 initiative.

The Director will manage and coordinate efforts designed to cultivate and recruit new levels of volunteer support from alumni, parents and friends of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity,

The role will be responsible for developing and fostering an organizational culture that recognizes the impact individual and groups of volunteers have in advancing the organization’s mission and vision while developing training initiatives and resources designed to improve student mentoring and support

Prior volunteer management experience in a nonprofit environment is desired.

Undergraduate to Serve FSPAC Student Finance Committee

Kyle Reynolds, Kansas State ’08, has been selected to serve on the Student Finance Committee (SFC) for the Fraternity & Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC). Kyle is one of 15 undergraduate fraternity and sorority leaders from across the country to serve on this committee.

The SFC was created in conjunction with the FSPAC’s efforts to expand its level of student involvement and build a broad network of students who can help spread the word about what the FSPAC is doing to benefit Greek life.

SFC members will represent the FSPAC at various fundraisers, events and meetings, providing much needed student perspective for our lawmakers in Washington. They will also help inform students on their campus and in their state/region about the FSPAC’s activities and how to get involved.

The FSPAC and SFC hopes to raised $25,000 from student donations – aiming to collect $25 from at least $1,000 student donors for the upcoming fundraising cycle. Each member of the SFC is required to raise $1,000 in order to remain on the committee and will be directly involved with all FSPAC activities from now until Election Day 2012.

Fraternity Seeks Alumni Volunteers

In alignment with the Fraternity’s bold vision for the future of being America’s Leading Fraternity, the Fraternity is pleased to announce today a call for alumni volunteers to serve the Fraternity as a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Commissioner Program. Included in this message you will find information about the program and how you can apply to be considered for this highly selective volunteer leadership opportunity.

The Delta Sigma Phi Commissioner Program is a two-year opportunity to work in collaboration with the Fraternity’s professional staff and other key volunteers to successfully implement the organization’s strategic objectives while delivering on its mission of building better men. Specifically, we are seeking men to work in one of the following two target areas:

Chapter-level Advisory Support

In this role, members of the Commissioner Program will be trained and expected to support the Fraternity’s efforts to ensure that by June 30, 2015:

1. All chapters have an Alumni Corporation Board (ACB);

2. No fewer than 50% of ACB’s operate utilizing a strategic plan, which includes:

a. Recruitment & development of a Chapter Advisory Team

b. Formation of an Alumni Chapter

c. Creation and active support for a Chapter Scholarship Fund through the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation

In this capacity, Commissioners will be assigned two-to-three projects in a specific region on an annual basis that involve working closely with members of the Fraternity’s chapter advancement and volunteer development staff. Assigned staff will provide training and support to the Commissioner both of whom are responsible to the Executive Director for successfully achieving targeted outcomes.

Given the regular interaction with alumni and other volunteers, it is expected that those men selected to work in this area will have significant previous volunteer experience within a Delta Sigma Phi ACB, as a member of a Chapter Advisory Team, or have previously served on the Fraternity’s professional staff.

Chapter Advancement & Development Support

In this role, members of the Commissioner Program will be trained and expected to support the Fraternity’s efforts to ensure that by June 30, 2015:

1. 90% or more of chapters will outperform their own campus’ fraternity community annual initiation rate;

2. At least 75% of chapters will meet or exceed their all campus GPA;

3. The Fraternity will grow to 125 undergraduate chapters and colonies with an average chapter size of 48 men.

In this capacity, Commissioners will be assigned two-to-three projects in a specific region on an annual basis that involve working closely with members of the Fraternity’s chapter advancement and new chapter development staff. Assigned staff will provide training and support to the Commissioner both of whom are responsible to the Executive Director for successfully achieving targeted outcomes.

Given the regular interaction with undergraduate members and alumni volunteers, it is expected that those men selected to work in this area will have previous experience working with college students or young people.

All members of the Commissioner Program will work under the coordination and direction of the Executive Director (or his designee) who is accountable to the Fraternity’s Grand Council for the successful implementation of the Vision 2025 initiative and more specifically, for ensuring that the organizational infrastructure needed to recruit, train and provide support to a fully engaged network of 2500 or more alumni volunteers by June 30, 2025 is in place.

In this highly visible role, members of the Commissioner Program will serve as ambassadors of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. As a result it is expected that they will consistently represent the Fraternity with the honor and integrity and that they will fully support and champion the Fraternity’s mission, vision, core values and the policies and plans adopted to support them at all times.

Fall Internship Opportunity with Patton Boggs LLP

Patton Boggs LLP is seeking dedicated students with an interest in public policy and government relations to fill unpaid internship positions for the fall 2011. Patton Boggs LLP is consistently ranked as the top government relations firm in Washington, DC with a reputation for cutting-edge advocacy before Congress and the Executive branch. As an AMLAW 100 firm, Patton Boggs also has outstanding litigation, business transaction and intellectual property practices.

This internship program is available through the firm’s Public Policy Department though participants will have the chance to be exposed to other areas of legal practice.

Applicants are accepted from all academic majors but should be able to demonstrate an interest in public policy or the law as a future career path. Previous government-related internship experience is recommended although not required. Eligible applicants must be entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate education as of September 2011.

The internship will take place over 10-15 weeks, beginning in September and ending in December. Applicants are required to secure academic credit for their internship.

Vision 2025 puts Delta Sig on an aggressive course to become America’s leading fraternity. Fraternity Announces 2011 Pyramid of Excellence Finalists

Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity today announces 13 outstanding chapters amongst the contenders for recognition as a recipient of the 2011 Pyramid of Excellence Award—the highest honor bestowed upon chartered chapters of the Fraternity.

The Pyramid of Excellence Award is presented annually to undergraduate chapters who have demonstrated excellence in all areas of fraternity operations in a given academic year, and through their collective contributions to the Fraternity and their host campuses exemplify the true spirit of our founders by personifying the Fraternity’s mission of building better men.

The Pyramid of Excellence Awards will be presented on Sunday evening, July 31 during the Convention Closing Banquet & Awards Ceremony.

Foundation Now Accepting Applications for McKee Scholarships

Today, the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation announces the opening of the application period for the 2011 McKee Scholarship. The scholarship is available to undergraduate members and those alumni members who are pursuing graduate degrees.

The McKee Scholarship program is made available thanks to the generosity of the late Hensel McKee, Washington '30, and his late wife, Jeanette.

The Delta Sigma Phi Foundation will award up to $5,000 per individual scholarship recipient. To be eligible, applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and be initiated members of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity in good standing.

The application deadline is Friday, July 1st, 2011. To be considered, all components of the application must be completed and received by that date. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications must be completed using the online form, which can be accessed by clicking here. Only official transcripts received from the college or university will be considered. Scholarship recipients will be notified of their selection by August 1st, 2011.

Accreditation Applications Due June 1

Accreditation Applications are due by June 1.

In order to perpetuate the high reputation of Delta Sigma Phi, the membership has asked that chapters be evaluated on a comprehensive set of standards. All chapters are required to submit an Accreditation Application which highlights their compliance with the standards of the Fraternity. This ensures that each chapter maintains a high level of progress and achievement Accreditation Applications are due to headquarters by June 1, groups who miss the June 1 deadline will be subject to a $500 fine.

Accreditation points are earned for chapter activities that demonstrate commitment to the standards of Delta Sigma Phi. The 25 Minimum Standards are separated into six distinct categories:

Academic & Personal Success
Membership Growth & Retention
Advisory Support and Management
Responsibility & Accountability
Campus and Community Involvement
Financial and Administrative Management

Your chapter must meet the minimum standards annually. No partial credit can be earned. Either the standard is met in full or it is not met at all. Starting August 1, 2011, failure to meet the minimum standards will result in a chapter/colony being placed on immediate probation.

Each of the 25 standards is worth four points. A total of 100 points are possible. Scoring at least 80/100 constitutes meeting the minimum standards. A required source of documentation is listed for most standards. The Fraternity reserves the right to determine whether sufficient documentation has been provided. Failure to sufficiently document any item will lead to loss of standard being met.

Fraternity Accepting Applications for Undergraduate Awards

Delta Sigma Phi provides opportunities for its members, recognized groups and friends to excel and be recognized for their accomplishments. These recognitions are provided both for individuals and groups, specifically for undergraduate members the Fraternity awards The Order of the Sphinx and the E. Allen James Outstanding Undergraduate Award. Applications and supporting material should be submitted by June 1.

The Order of Sphinx Award is given biennially to those undergraduates nominated by their chapters or a national officer for outstanding contributions as an undergraduate to their campuses , chapters and the Fraternity. Each chapter may submit one nominee for every 25 members in their chapter.

The highest award the Fraternity can give to an undergraduate brother is the E. Allen James Outstanding Undergraduate Award. The award is given annually to the one undergraduate brother who contributed the most to his chapter and the Fraternity. Selection is based on an application that is submitted to the Fraternity Headquarters and is reviewed by a committee.

The award is named in honor of E. Allen James, NC State ‘65, whose service to the Fraternity has included the position of Executive Director, member of the Grand Council and president of the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation.

The recipient is presented with a mounted certificate and a medallion, which is worn at formal fraternal events. In addition to the winner, a varying number of certificates of merit may also be awarded.

Fire Engulfs Epsilon Omega Chapter House

During the early hour morning hours on April 20, flames blazed through the Epsilon Omega Chapter house destroying the property in its entirety. Thankfully, all chapter members who lived in the house are accounted for and were not harmed.

The Fraternity has committed its full support to making sure that our brothers at Epsilon Omega can complete the remaining weeks of the semester with as little disruption as it possible despite these extremely difficult circumstances.

The McKee Challenge was a participation-based fundraising initiative that allowed for Delta Sigma Phi alumni to help their chapter compete for academic scholarships from the Hensel and Janette McKee Scholarship Fund. Undergraduate men who were affiliated with a winning chapter and maintained at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) where eligible to apply for scholarships.

Grand Council Approves Three Charter Petitions

The Grand Council has voted to recognize the following colonies as chartered undergraduate chapters:

Binghamton University Colony
Indiana University South Bend Colony
Theta Zeta Colony at Colorado State University

At the time of their chartering, the Theta Zeta Colony will once again be known as the Theta Zeta Chapter and our colonies at Binghamton and IU South Bend will receive their Greek designations. When that occurs, Binghamton Colony will be known as the Iota Beta Chapter and IUSB Colony will be known as the Iota Gamma Chapter.

Congratulations to the number of brothers, particularly the leaders of each groups’ Alumni Corporation Board and the undergraduate colony members who have put in an extraordinary effort these past few years to ensure that Delta Sigma Phi is synonymous with success at each of your respective universities. You should all be very proud of yourselves, as you have accomplished so much.

We look forward to sharing more positive news about this milestone event and the continued success of these groups.

Fraternity to Hire New Chapter Development Coordinator

Delta Sigma Phi seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic self‐starter who will have responsibility for the growth and development of the Fraternity at college campuses throughout America.

The Coordinator will be a key member of the Fraternity’s professional staff and will work with staff and volunteers to successfully recruit men for expansion and redevelopment projects which increases Delta Sigma Phi’s presence on campuses nationwide.

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us for the 57th and Biennial Convention of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity this July 28 – 31st at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate in Orlando, Florida. This year’s convention promises to be one filled with excitement, unsurpassed by years past. Attendees will have the opportunity to gather and celebrate the great successes of our brotherhood and to explore the adventures and thrills of Orlando.

Surrounded by 36 holes of championship golf, the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and 15 acres of recreation, the Omni ChampionsGate is one of the nation’s premier golf, meeting and leisure retreats. In addition to a European-style spa and five on site restaurants, guests will be able to enjoy 15 acres of pools and recreational activities including the 850 foot lazy river.

In addition to the business of the Fraternity, undergraduate delegates and members receive valuable training focused on strengthening chapter and member performance, and are provided personal/professional development opportunities through built-in Convention networking opportunities and seminars.

For alumni members we offer a plethora of opportunities to help you engage and advance our Fraternity while visiting with old friends and making new ones. This year our convention program continues the Friends of Delta Sigma Phi Program, launched in 2007 as an opportunity for spouses and guests to participate in the Convention experience.

Delta Sigma Phi is returning to Drexel University next fall after a three year hiatus from campus.

2011 Leadership Institute Applications Now Available

Applications for Delta Sigma Phi's flagship leadership development course are now available! The 2011 Leadership Institute will be held July 14 - 19 in Brookston, Indiana. LI applications and supporting material are due by Friday, March 18.

The Leadership Institute is a five-day, intense training and development institute, that has graduated more than 1000 brothers since its inception in 1993, and over 50% of those give back to the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation. The cutting-edge curriculum intentionally provides several small group sessions in which participants experience the topics in a more intimate setting for discussion and analysis. There are also increased mentoring opportunities with alumni facilitators in small groups. Topics range from leading organizations to ethical decision-making to motivating others to act.

The Fraternity selects LI attendees from an elite group of high-caliber men based on their superior academic performance, leadership, campus and community involvement, and letters of recommendation. Undergraduates selected to attend the LI are not only chapter leaders, but many are also leaders in their campus community. Award Recipient Scholarship Applications

Congratulations to The McKee Challenge winning chapters!!! A total of $27,000 will be distributed in the form of academic scholarships to qualified undergraduate members.

Any undergraduate Brother with a 3.0 GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale) from the following winning chapters may apply to receive one of the Hensel & Jeanette McKee Scholarships. Funds will be awarded for use in fall semester 2011. Applications are due February 18, 2011. CLICK HERE FOR THE APPLICATION.

Zeta Xi – St. Cloud State – $10,000 (10 scholarships)

Epsilon Tau – Grand Valley State - $4,000 (4 scholarships)

Beta Nu – Cal State Fresno - $7,000 (7 scholarships)

Delta Epsilon – Missouri University of S&T - $2,000 (2 scholarships)

Gamma Epsilon – San Jose State - $2,000 (2 scholarships)

Theta Kappa – SUNY-Oswego - $2,000 (2 scholarships)

Omega Financial Contest Winners Announced

$7,500 was distributed amongst six chapters on Saturday, Jan. 8 for their participation in the Omega Financial Contest.

Omega Financial provides all billing and membership management services for all active chapters and colonies of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. As a result of this service and relationship, the Fraternity negotiated a reduced service fee with Omega Financial. Furthermore, the Fraternity launched an incentive to entice all chapters to set up an Omega account by May 1, 2011.

The first five chapters to begin using Omega Financial, after the initiative was launched, were each awarded $1,000. The winners were:

Sigma - Thiel College

Delta Lambda - Utah State University

Alpha lambda - Millikin University

Epsilon Tau - Grand Valley State University

Delta Epsilon - Missouri S&T

A grand prize, in the amount of $2,500 was also awarded to a chapter utilizing Omega Financial services. In a random drawing, the Epsilon Omega Chapter, Illinois State University, won the grand prize. Epsilon Omega has the option of using these funds for a housing improvement project or applying them toward their 21^st Century Fund.

In order to win, all chapters must have started service and billing, be in good standing and be present at The Summit.

Sustainability v. Relevance

Delta Sigma Phi is celebrating 111 years of existence today. Let me begin by saying congratulations to all of our members. As brothers, we have joined a movement that represents less than 0.0004% of the current population of the United States. While we have been incredibly successful in sustaining our operations and value proposition in the most difficult of times, we now have a tremendous opportunity to increase our relevancy.

Our founders’ infinite wisdom to break the mold of traditional and create the basis of our living organization today was not only prophetic – it was relevant. A number of you have heard members of the Grand Council introduce the concept of relevancy in recent years. I cannot think of a more appropriate time to reflect upon this concept and its importance to our organization, than the day we pause to remember the magnitude of our founding.

A primary component of VISION 2025 is making certain each of our members (undergraduates and alumni alike) have the opportunities and clear direction as to how they may impact Delta Sigma Phi in every phase of their life. It is possible, as other fraternal organizations have proven, to create an experience focused on a given moment in time. Such efforts expend untold resources to attract new members equal to their attrition – and get lucky if they find a few folks to stick around for longer assignments. For me, this is the very definition of sustainability and while it is currently cache to live a “sustainable life,” I do not believe our founders intended our brotherhood to merely sustain itself!

Our Ritual and values were intentionally designed to attract a widely diverse membership seeking a life-long and life changing experience. This means we must be and remain relevant! Our Fraternity cannot fulfill its mission until each member realizes their individual contributions impact the local community, the lives of our brothers and the macro environment in which they reside. If we each will live to the ideals contained within the Ritual and to the highest standards of the oaths we have taken, our relevancy in every corner of the world will become overwhelming.

Brothers, during this incredible season of joy and celebration, please take a moment to reflect on the oaths we have taken, the phenomenal successes we have achieved, each of your significant individual contributions and ask yourself one question: How can we increase the relevancy of Delta Sigma Phi? Once you have an answer, I challenge you to go make it happen. At that exact moment in time, we will all get just a little closer to brothers Tonsor and Boskey's visions for a better brotherhood!

McKee Challenge Weekly Update

You can help your chapter compete for $50,000 in academic scholarships by participating in the McKee Challenge! The chapter with the highest percentage of Brothers participating has the opportunity to earn up to $10,000 in scholarships for its current undergraduate members!

The McKee Challenge is a participation-based fundraising initiative in which Delta Sigma Phi alumni can help their chapter compete for academic scholarships from the Hensel and Janette McKee Scholarship Fund. Every chapter has an equal chance to win a minimum of $3,000 and up to $10,000 in scholarships that will be available for distribution in April 2011.

Registration for 2011 Regional Leadership Academies Now Open

The Regional Leadership Academy (RLA) is a day-long program designed to provide valuable training to undergraduate leaders and volunteers of Delta Sigma Phi.

To help each of you make great things happen for your brothers, the format and conversations have elevated from RLAs of the past. You will be in work groups with men from other chapters that will allow you to Build a Stronger Chapter back home.

You will be involved in smaller group conversations with chapters who are similar to yours. Working with others, you will have the chance to identify different opportunities and develop solutions to the challenges you face.

So who comes to the RLAs this year? Think about it this way…you want to bring men with you who are serious about making your chapter stronger.

The curriculum is specifically designed to help chapters/colonies excel in developing a stronger chapter through the categories outlined in the Accreditation Document, such as Academic & Personal Success, Membership Growth & Retention, etc.

Each chapter/colony can register ten undergraduates and alumni volunteers for $150, which has already been billed to the chapter/colony as part of the annual dues. Additional delegates can attend at the rate of $45 per man which will be billed to the chapter/colony following the RLA.

Registration for The Summit Now Open

Join Delta Sigma Phi January 7-9, 2011 in Brookston, Indiana for the 2011 Summit, a leadership program for Delta Sigma Phi’s chapter presidents and recruitment chairmen!

The Summit is an incredible training opportunity to gain valuable skills in pursuit of building America’s Leading Fraternity. The event will cover best practices, and provide education and training on effective leadership, motivation and personal development. Participating leaders will leave motivated to create change and initiate action-oriented results to aid in the growth and development of Delta Sig chapters.

There is no registration fee and your transportation costs will be covered by the national Fraternity!

The only cost incurred for chapters is a $300 lodging and accommodation fee that is payable upon registration. The fee is per chapter (so essentially $150 per attendee) that covers lodging and all meals while at Camp Tecumseh. In past years, chapters were responsible for paying for their hotel rooms and two meals when the event was held in downtown Indianapolis - a cost higher than $300. This fee encompasses all meals and the rooms for two attendees, a great value for chapters.

Registration is now open, and we hope to have more than the 88% participation from chapters that we had in 2010. Make your plans to attend now by registering for The Summit today!

Delta Sigs Successful on Election Night

Four Delta Sigs won elections on Tuesday night, two in US Congress races and two in State Representative races.

US Congress

New York

Tom Reed, Alfred '91, won a seat in the US Congress representing New York's 29th Congressional District. Reed won his race 56-44%.

Ohio

Rep. Mike Turner, Ohio Northern '79, was re-elected to a sixth term to serve in Congress in Ohio's 3rd Congressional District. Turner won his race 69-31%.

State Races

Michigan

Frank Foster, Grand Valley State '05, was elected with 63% of the vote to serve as a State Representative in Michigan's 107th District. While an undergraduate, Foster served as Grand Valley State's student body president, and had a number of Delta Sigs assisting him in his campaign for a State Representative position.

Missouri

Delus Johnson, Missouri '85, was elected to serve as a representative for Missouri's 28th District. Johnson won with 63% of the vote.

Chapters Host Family-Friendly Halloween Events in their Communities

Epsilon Pi - Woodbury University

Delta Sigma Phi's Epsilon Pi Chapter at Woodbury University recently teamed with Sigma Omega Nu sorority on campus to bring pumpkin carving to the Burbank, California Boys & Girls Club.

According to Epsilon Pi chapter president, Shawn Morey, Woodbury '08, "We reached out to the community, and business like Trader Joes and Ralphs donated pumpkins, carving kits and Halloween candy. We then had about 25 kids from the Boys and Girls club onto our campus where members of Delta Sigma Phi and Sigma Omega Nu helped these students carve pumpkins that they were then allowed to take home to their family."

The chapter participates in this event annually as a way to give back to the local community.

Epsilon Tau - Grand Valley State University

On Thursday, October 28, Delta Sigma Phi's Epsilon Tau Chapter will be working with the Rho Eta chapter of Phi Mu sorority, the non-traditional students of GVSU's Holland campus, the Grand Valley State University Pre-Medical Club, and the University staff of the Holland campus to provide a safe trick-or-treating venue for kids in the area.

Participants in this program will be creating a "neighborhood" out of their parked cars in one of the large parking lots on campus. Each participant will be dressed in costume, and kids will then be able to trick-or-treat at the trunk of each vehicle. The trunks will be filled with candy, all provided by the men of Delta Sigma Phi and the members of the Pre-Medical Club at GVSU.

There will also be face painting, bobbing for apples, and other Halloween themed games inside the community center on the campus.

October 2010 E-Newsletter Released

The October 2010 issue of Delta Sigma Philes was released today. It includes a Fall 2010 recruitment update, the winners of the 2010 McKee Scholarships, an update on the Fraternity's new chapter development program and schedule, and updates on undergraduate chapters and members excelling on campuses across the country.

First Fall 2010 Recruitment Report Released

Numerous Delta Sig chapters and colonies have reported excellent recruitment results thus far during the Fall 2010 semester. Leading the way is the Theta Mu Chapter at the University of Kentucky with a fantastic 46 recruits. The chapter has been a top chapter in recruitment for a number of years, and is continuing its excellent efforts.

Theta Mu is followed closely by the Gamma Epsilon Chapter at San Jose State University who recruited and pinned 33 new members this Fall. Residing on what is mainly a commuter campus, Gamma Epsilon has continued its excellent recruitment efforts since its rechartering in 2009.

In a tie for third with 32 recruits are the soon-to-be rechartered Beta Kappa Chapter at the University of Alabama and the Epsilon Tau Chapter at Grand Valley State University. Rounding out the Top 5 is the Beta Mu Chapter at Transylvania University with 30 recruits.

Fraternity Seeks Applicants for Marketing & Social Media Manager

Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity seeks a dynamic, enthusiastic self-starter with at least 1-3 years of experience to manage the organization’s marketing and online communication efforts as it strives to become America’s Leading Fraternity.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Membership/Marketing, the Manager will develop and initiate an overarching communications/marketing and branding plan to ensure that all messaging is coordinated and enhances the organization’s strategic plan. The Manager’s workload will include developing and initiating event marketing plans, managing the organization’s growing use of video and social media tools, managing the organization’s web site and electronic publications, and creating content that can be repurposed across many platforms.

The position will be responsible for the following areas:

Two Chapters Help Local Communities

Alpha Mu - University of Virginia

The Alpha Mu Chapter recently participated in the Charlottesville Boys and Girls Club Cycle Challenge. The chapter assisted with the set up and logistics for the event, which includes three different lengths of rides (62, 31, or 17 miles), with riders raising money for the Boys & Girls Club of Charlottesville.

Chapter president Jeffrey Bronick, Virginia '08, said, " As a whole, we enjoyed ourselves and were honored to participate in this program that helped these kids."

Gamma Epsilon - San Jose State University

The Gamma Epsilon Chapter recently raised nearly $500 from fellow students and professors in an effort to aid the victims of the San Bruno, California gas explosion. The chapter received a great deal of attention for their efforts, including this story in its campus newspaper.

Chapter president Henry Negrete, San Jose State '07, said, "The explosion happened on Thursday and we began collecting donations at our table on campus on Monday. In just two days of tabling we collected over $400 to be donated to the Bay Area Red Cross for the San Bruno fire victims."

Congratulations to these two chapters on their outstanding work in the community!

Fraternity Names 2010 Pyramid of Excellence Recipients

Seven outstanding chapters will be the recipients of the 2010 Pyramid of Excellence Awards, Delta Sigma Phi's top award for its chapters. The winning chapters, and a little about each, are below:

Alpha Alpha - University of Illinois

The Alpha Alpha Chapter has a 3.12 cumulative Grade Point Average, and during the 2009-10 academic year had 81% of its members involved in another campus organization. Chapter members participated in nearly 750 hours of community service, and raised $2,500 for the Mental Health Center of Champaign County.

Alpha Delta - University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

The Alpha Delta Chapter excelled in recruitment during the 2009-10 academic year, growing 33% between 2008-09 and 2009-10. In addition, the chapter averaged more than 20 hours of community service per member, and 100% of the chapter's members were involved in another campus organization during the last academic year.

Alpha Tau - Albion College

Alpha Tau Chapter at Albion had a 3.25 Grade Point Average as a group, one of the highest across the Fraternity last academic year. In addition, the group recruited 18 men to join the chapter last year and 85% of its members are involved in another student organization on campus.

Alpha Upsilon - Kansas State University

The Alpha Upsilon Chapter at Kansas State can hang its hat on outstanding leadership within its ranks. Of the chapter, 86% of the members are involved in other campus organizations, while 35% of the chapter holds a leadership position in another campus organization. In addition, Alpha Upsilon completed nearly 1,000 hours of community service in 2009-10.

Beta Mu - Transylvania University

Impressively, the Beta Mu Chapter has had the top Grade Point Average among fraternities on its campus for 62 consecutive semesters. In addition, the chapter completed 1,500 hours of community service, has 91% of its chapter members involved in other campus organizations, and 42% of its members hold leadership positions on campus outside the Fraternity.

Delta Epsilon - Missouri University of Science & Technology

The Delta Epsilon Chapter completed nearly 700 hours of community service during the 2009-10 academic year, while having 85% of its members involved in other campus organizations. In addition, 20% of the chapter's members hold leadership positions in those outside organizations.

Zeta Chi - University of Alabama, Birmingham

The Zeta Chi Chapter impressively beat the All Men's Grade Point Average on campus by .3 points, which shows its commitment to academics. In addition, the chapter completed more than 1,600 hours of community service, which averages to 38 hours per man. They accomplished all of this with 75% of the chapter's members being involved in other campus organizations.

Colony Wins Numerous Awards at Greek Convocation

The Gamma Zeta Colony at Rutgers University recently received a number of honos at its beginning of the academic year Greek Convocation. Included in their awards are programming, brotherhood development, leadership development, and academic achievement awards. See below for the details:

Alumnus Becomes Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation President

Delta Sig Foundation Board member, and former Grand Councilman, Gene Vance, Transylvania '85, was recently named president of the Omicron Delta Kappa Foundation.

Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) is the national leadership honor society, and its Foundation administers the professional and philanthropic activities of the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, Inc. Vance has served on the ODK National Board of Directors as its General Counsel for 10 years, and will serve in his new role from 2010-2012.

About his new role, Vance said, "The ODK Foundation provides the means by which Omicron Delta Kappa furthers its mission of recognizing and educating our nation's collegiate leaders. It is a privilege to serve as president of the Foundation and to carry on the important work of raising funds and seeing the good works those funds help produce."

Delta Sig Welcomes New Grand Councilman

On August 9, Delta Sigma Phi welcomed its newest Grand Councilman, Ryan Whitchurch, San Jose State ’07. Whitchurch was elected to serve as the second undergraduate member of the Grand Council through the Fraternity’s first online election process. He will replace outgoing undergraduate member Tom Seto, Purdue ‘05, who served from 2008-2010.

Whitchurch has been heavily involved in the Fraternity since his initiation, serving in a variety of roles locally and nationally. These include serving as his chapter’s president, vice president, and sergeant at arms. He also served as the chapter’s voting delegate at the 2009 Convention, and as the Northwestern Region’s member of the Undergraduate Advisory Committee.

National President Chris Edmonds, UAB ’88, said, “We are excited to have Ryan join Delta Sigma Phi’s Grand Council. His significant leadership experience at the undergraduate level will provide a very valuable perspective as we continue to move Delta Sigma Phi’s strategic planning process forward.”

Whichurch officially took office on August 1, and will remain in office until July 31, 2012. He became the second undergraduate member, joining Caleb Williams, Georgia ’06, who remains on the Grand Council until July 31, 2011.

Fraternity Chosen to Expand at the University of Central Florida

Delta Sig staff received word late last week that the Fraternity has been chosen to start a new chapter on the campus of the University of Central Florida. Located in Orlando, UCF is one of the nation's largest universities with an enrollment of nearly 53,000 students.

The new chapter at UCF will be the Fraternity's second active chapter in Florida, joining the Alpha Chi Chapter at Stetson University.

The fact that the Fraternity was chosen is especially interesting given the fact that the 2011 Delta Sig Convention will be held in Orlando from July 28 - August 1, 2011.

Leadership Institute Kicks Off

The 18th Delta Sigma Phi Leadership institute kicks off on Friday, July 30, with 52 undergraduate leaders arriving at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Indiana for an intense five day leadership training program.

The 52 brothers were chosen from a large pool of applicants based on their outstanding leadership capabilities and previous experience. In addition, 13 staff members and volunteers will facilitate sessions to assist the young leaders in gaining an outstanding experience.

Delta Sigs Initiated into Gamma Sigma Alpha

Twelve Delta Sig undergraduate and graduate students were initiated into Gamma Sigma Alpha, the National Greek Academic Greek Honor Society, during the 2009-10 academic year.

Gamma Sigma Alpha strives to uphold the high ideals of scholastic achievement and therefore, only students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above (on a 4.0 scale) at the start of their junior year, or a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in any semester during their junior or senior year, are eligible.

Fraternity Announces 2010 Leadership Institute Attendees

A total of 52 brothers from across the country have been accepted to participate in the 2010 Leadership Institute, Delta Sig's flagship leadership training program. The event will be held July 30-August 3, 2010 at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Indiana.

To be accepted into the event, brothers must have a proven record of campus and community involvement, have completed at least two years of school, provide a academic transcript, and also provide two letters of reference. A committee of alumni members chose the 52 brothers from a large pool of applicants.

2010 Membership Directory Project Well Underway

In late March, Delta Sigs across the country began receiving mailed postcards announcing the start of data collection for the 2010 Delta Sigma Phi Membership Directory.

The postcards are legitimate, and we encourage you to call the toll-free number on the cards to provide the most up-to-date contact information for the directory. You may also order your copy of the directory at that time, which will be released in late September 2010.

Throughout the next two months, you will receive a postcard every two weeks if you do not respond to the initial outreach as a reminder to take a moment to update your information. The phone call should last no longer than five minutes.

Beginning in late May, those who have not responded will receive a phone call outreach asking them to update their information. This is an opportunity to once again provide you with a chance to get the most updated information included in the directory.

According to Executive Director, Scott Wiley, “We are excited to again be partnering with Harris Connect to develop a membership directory for our alumni. This is an excellent opportunity for Delta Sigs to connect and engage with their fellow brothers from across the country. I’d like to encourage all of our alumni to participate in the data gathering process so our 2010 membership directory can be as accurate as possible.”

The directory will be available for purchase at the time of your information update, and will be delivered in late 2010. Should you wish to not be included, or if you are not interested in receiving future outreach by mail or phone regarding the directory project, please call the toll-free number on the first postcard you receive to let us know!

Fraternity Receives NIC Laurel Wreath Award

Delta Sigma Phi was honored with the 2010 North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) Laurel Wreath Award for its role in supporting the University Learning Outcomes Assessment (UniLOA) research that resulted in industry altering data on the role fraternities play in the overall college experience. The award was presented in April at the NIC Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Delta Sigma Phi was joined by four other fraternal organizations interested in this research when all realized that from the UniLOA they also could measure how a man’s fraternity involvement impacts his overall student and membership development. “Thanks to this partnership we are better able to speak with scientific certainty about the impact of fraternity or sorority membership on student development and growth,” said Peter D. Smithhisler, NIC president and CEO. Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Upsilon, Phi Kappa Tau, and Zeta Tau Alpha shared the 2010 Laurel Wreath Award with Delta Sigma Phi.

Deadline for McKee Scholarship Applications Extended

The application deadline for the McKee Scholarship has been extended to Friday, June 4, 2010. The scholarship is available to undergraduate members pursuing undergraduate degrees, and those alumni members who are pursuing graduate degrees.

The Delta Sigma Phi Foundation will award up to $5,000 per individual scholarship recipient.

As a reminder, to be eligible, applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and be initiated members of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity in good standing. To be considered, all components of the application must be completed and received by that date, including an official transcript from the college or university you are attending. Incomplete applications will not be considered, and applications must be completed using the online form provided below.

Scholarship recipients will be notified of their selection by August 1, 2010.

May 2010 Delta Sigma Philes E-newsletter Released

Delta Sigma Phil released the May 2010 issue of its Delta Sigma Philes e-newsletter today.

The May issue is full of interesting stories about the great things happening within Delta Sigma Phi. Included are three awards recently won by the Fraternity and an undergraduate member, news about the ongoing membership directory project, and information about the Spring 2010 issue of The Carnation magazine. In addition, 14 chapters provided updates on their efforts to be better men, and three stories of alumni making positive news are also included.

The Carnation Wins Award

The Carnation magazine of Delta Sigma Phi recently received an award from the Fraternity Communications Association (FCA) at the association's recognition banquet last week in New Orleans.

The Carnation received a first place award in the Persuasive Essay category for its Fall 2009 feature story entitled Mission Possible (With Your Help).

This is the second award the Fraternity has received from FCA since 2008, when The Carnation received a second place award in the Human Interest Article category for its Mission to Warlordistan piece from the Spring 2007 issue.

According to Bruce Hammond, editor of The Carnation, "We're very excited to be recognized by the FCA in 2010, especially since this year there were more entries than any previous year."

The Fraternity Communications Association is made up of editors and other communications professionals from over 70 fraternities and sororities, and holds its annual recognition banquet during its annual meeting each May.

Stewart Wins NIC Award

Delta Sig undergraduate Branden Stewart, Grand Valley State '07, was awarded the Award of Distinction by the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) at the organization's annual meeting.

From the NIC's web site, the Award of Dictinction "seeks to recognize the fraternity man who has found in his experience an outlet for developing as both a leader and a better man. The recipient(s) will strive to embody the values of his fraternity and will expect the same from those with whom he associates."

Delta Delta Chapter and Individual Member Win Awards

Tom Seto, Purdue '05, was named Fraternity Man of the Year on Purdue University's campus at the annual Greek Awards Banquet held on Sunday, April 18. Seto, who serves as one of the two undergraduate members of the Fraternity's Grand Council, also served as the Purdue Interfraternity Council president in 2009-2010.

In addition to Seto's award, the Delta Delta Chapter's team won the inaugural Electric Vehicle Grand Prix event sponsored by Purdue University's Engineering Department on April 18.

According to the event's web site, "To compete in the Purdue Electric Vehicle Grand Prix, multi-disciplinary student teams must design and build energy-efficient electric go-karts. Student EPICS teams work together to design, build, and market the go-kart event on Purdue’s campus and throughout Indiana, by partnering with industry, government agencies, and community outreach programs. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends kart design and community outreach with race placement and optimal efficiency during 100 laps of racing."

Today, Delta Sigma Phil released the latest issue of its monthly Delta Sigma Philes e-newsletter.

The April issue included a letter from the Grand Council President about how the Delta Sig leadership is working to move the Fraternity toward becoming America's Leading Fraternity. In addition, it included a number of stories of chapters doing great things on their campuses and in their communities, and an audio interview with an undergraduate who won a NCAA Division II national championship this past year in indoor track & field.

Letter from the Grand Council President

“Ambition—desire to achieve a particular end.”

Brothers,

As our Fraternity enters the final stretch of one of the greatest years in its 110 year history, where membership recruitment performance will again increase by double digits, leadership training and development opportunities will be expanded to new heights, and more undergraduate chapters have alumni advisory support than ever before, it’d be easy to get complacent. Today I write to let you know that the men who have been elected to lead Delta Sigma Phi don’t intend to take that route.

In the last several months, the Grand Council and staff leadership has undertaken the next phase of the Fraternity’s strategic planning efforts. In the months ahead, I look forward to sharing how those efforts will continue to transform our Fraternity for a new generation of Delta Sigma Phi men. In advance of that, I thought it particularly important to begin a dialogue about how we will frame that effort in the years ahead.

As a reference point, it is important to state and reaffirm that our mission of building better men remains at the core of all we do. That mission, and related efforts, are further emphasized by our core values of culture, harmony and friendship—which since our founding have served to guide the journey that more than 115,000 lifetime initiates have begun. Now more than ever before, that journey is focused on a vision for Delta Sigma Phi that positions our great brotherhood as America’s Leading Fraternity.

This mission, these values and that strategic vision are at the forefront of the decisions the Fraternity’s Grand Council makes as we think about how to best position Delta Sigma Phi for the opportunities ahead. In doing so, we have identified three pillars for which our efforts will remain grounded, and an ambition for each reflecting how we will continue to build the Delta Sig Experience around them. They are to:

Apply Today for the 2010 Leadership Institute

The application form for the 2010 Delta Sigma Phi Leadership Institute is now available in the About section of the Fraternity's web site.

Formerly known as The College of Engineered Leadership, The Leadership Institute (LI) is our Fraternity’s flagship leadership development offering. A five-day, intense training and development institute, the LI has graduated more than 600 brothers since its inception in 1993, and over 50% of those give back to the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation.

A recent attendee called the Leadership Institute, “the best thing Delta Sigma Phi does!” The cutting-edge curriculum intentionally provides several small group sessions in which participants experience the topics in a more intimate setting for discussion and analysis. There are also increased mentoring opportunities with alumni facilitators in small groups. Topics range from leading organizations to ethical decision-making to motivating others to act. The Fraternity selects LI attendees from an elite group of high-caliber men based on their superior academic performance, leadership, campus and community involvement, and letters of recommendation. Undergraduates selected to attend the LI are not only chapter leaders, but many are also leaders in their campus community.

Delta Sig Releases March E-newsletter

On Monday, March 8, Delta Sigma Phil released the latest issue of its monthly Delta Sigma Philes e-newsletter.

The March issue included a letter from the Executive Director about the efforts Delta Sig is making in providing a meaningful experience for its members. In addition, it included updates on the Fraternity's Spring recruitment and expansion efforts, undergraduate and alumni news, and a discussion with undergraduate leader Aaron Browner, Towson '07.

First Spring 2010 Recruitment Update

Spring 2010 Victory Report #1 - New Colony at Texas Tech Leads the Way

Leading the first recruitment Victory Report of the Spring 2010 semester is the Zeta Zeta Colony, which is being recolonized currently on the campus of Texas Tech University. The Fraternity's expansion team has been on the ground recruiting top quality men on campus, and has brought 51 men into the new colony in just three weeks.

As for established chapters and colonies, the Alpha Epsilon Chapter at Duke University has recruited 32 men this Spring putting them in second place, and the Epsilon Rho Chapter at Cal Poly, SLO has recruited 30 men to be in third. Beta Psi at Arizona State University is in fourth with 29, with Alpha Lambda at Millikin University and Iota Alpha at Georgia College & State University rounding out the Top 5 with 19 recruits apiece. Zeta Xi Raises Money for Minnesota Special Olympics

On Saturday, February 22, nine brothers from the Zeta Xi Chapter at St. Cloud State University raised $855 for the Minnesota Special Olympics at the Polar Bear Plunge in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The group exceeded its original goal of $750.

The Polar Bear Plunge is an event where coordinators and law enforcement cut a hole in the ice of a lake, and those who have donated more than $75 per person jump into the icy waters to benefit the Special Olympics.

Chapter member Wade Magnusson said, "We've always felt deeply connected with the community of St. Cloud, and this was an excellent opportunity to give back and have fun while doing it."

Each of the nine brothers who raised the money jumped into the icy waters, while many other chapter members attended to support them.

According to Zeta Xi's Philanthropy Chairman, Paul Thomas, "You would think that living in Minnesota would make you better prepared to jump in an icy lake. Today, I learned that nothing can prepare you for it."

February Delta Sigma Philes E-Newsletter Released

The newly formatted Delta Sigma Philes e-newsletter's inaugural issue was sent to alumni and undergraduates on Thursday, February 18. The newsletter will begin being sent the first Thursday of each month starting in March.

New features of the e-newsletter include:

Social Media Integration - Each story in the e-newsletter can now be further distributed through one of three social media tools: LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter.

Dedicated RSS Feed - There is now a dedicated RSS feed for Delta Sigma Philes that will allow you to pull the newsletter to your reader easily as well. The feed URL is: http://newsmanager.commpartners.com/dspbasic/issues/rss.php.

New content includes:

Message from the Leadership - Each issue of the newsletter will include a short piece from the leadership of the Fraternity about happenings or things to watch in the coming months.

Delta Sig Discussion - In each issue, a Delta Sig will be profiled with five questions relating to leadership, their career (professional or college), and other topics. In the next few issues, those spotlighted will be chapter leaders from across the U.S.

Six Undergraduates Participate in IFC Academy

Six undergraduate Delta Sigs representing four chapters recently participated in the IFC Academy sponsored by the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC).

Fraternity Welcomes Two New Staff Members

Two new expansion coordinators began work at the Fraternity as 2010 started, both with extensive leadership experience as undergraduates in their respective home chapters and on their campuses.

DJ Koessler, Grand Valley State ’05, joined the Epsilon Tau Chapter as a first semester college student, and served as his chapter’s president his senior year. In addition, he held leadership positions on his campus’ Interfraternity Council (IFC), student government association, and strategic positioning committee.

Koessler also attended numerous leadership training events, including the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI), the Mid-American Greek Council Association (MGCA) Conference, and the Delta Sigma Phi Summit and Leadership Institute.

According to Koessler, “Delta Sigma Phi is synonymous with my undergraduate experience. Taking advantage of the leadership opportunities Delta Sig had to offer, and hanging out with brothers have led to my best experiences as a fraternity man.”

For PJ Schinella, GCSU ’06, his experience as a founding father of the Iota Alpha Chapter at Georgia College & State University, made his undergraduate Fraternity experience an extremely positive one. Schinella served as his chapter’s new member educator, sergeant at arms, and vice president during his very busy undergraduate career.

In addition, he was extremely involved on campus. Schinella was a student ambassador, orientation leader, campus tour guide, a member of the Homecoming Planning Committee, a writer and business manager for his campus newspaper, and a member of the Georgia College & State University’s competition cheerleading squad.

According to Schinella, “I view my chapter as a child in a way. Being a founding father, I take great pride and joy watching the chapter’s continuous growth, and in watching members personally grow through their involvement in leadership positions. The most rewarding experience of this was at the chartering ceremony of my chapter. It was a sure sign that hard work does pay off and we had set a strong foundation for future members continued success.”

Both Koessler and Schinella will lead the Fraternity’s Spring 2010 expansion efforts at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and the redevelopment of the Zeta Zeta Chapter at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.

Month of Leadership Training Begins This Weekend

The Fraternity begins its month of leadership training events this weekend, January 8-10 with the third annual Summit program. The Summit, a program for chapter presidents and recruitment chairmen only, provides education and training on effective leadership, motivation and personal development. The event will have nearly 200 participants from across the country in Indianapolis beginning later today.

Over the next month, the Fraternity will also hold its 2010 Regional Leadership Academies (RLAs) in five cities across the country. The RLAs bring undergraduate chapter leaders and alumni volunteers together for a full day of interactive training to improve their skills and knowledge in multiple areas of chapter operations. These areas coincide with the seven areas of the Accreditation document - Academic & Personal Success, Membership Growth & Retention, Advisory Support & Management, Responsibility & Accountability, Campus & Community Involvement, Financial Management, and Ritual.

The five RLA sites and dates are:

January 23 - Atlanta, Georgia

January 23 - St. Louis, Missouri

January 30 - Chicago, Illinois

January 30 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

February 6 - Bay Area, California (CSU, East Bay)

In total, these leadership training programs will bring together approximately 900 undergraduate leaders and alumni volunteers over the next month to build better men.

Delta Sigma Phi: A Year in Review

January

The newly redesigned Fraternity web site at www.deltasig.org launched.

The second annual Summit program for chapter presidents and recruitment chairmen took place in Indianapolis, bringing nearly 175 undergraduate leaders to Indianapolis for a weekend of training.

February

The last of the five 2009 Regional Leadership Academies took place in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. In 2009, nearly 800 undergraduates and alumni volunteers attended the RLAs, where they were trained on chapter operations and leadership development.

March

The Fraternity successfully colonized on campus at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, and recolonized the dormant Gamma Rho Chapter at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania.

August

The Rho Class of the Delta Sigma Phi Leadership Institute graduated after attending the 17th annual event – the five day intense training and development institute which is the Fraternity’s flagship leadership training initiative.

The Delta Sig Foundation announced the inaugural winners of the Hensel and Jeanette McKee Scholarships.

It was announced that 48 Delta Sig undergraduates were inducted into the Order of Omega Greek Leadership Honorary in 2008-09.

A Chapter and Alumni Association helped their communities:

Tom Cycyota, Illinois ’77, was appointed to a vacant Grand Council seat created when Mike Hoffman, Arizona State ’85, became the Grand Council’s past president.

The Fraternity held two of the most successful recolonizations in its history – recruiting 44 men at the Gamma Tau Chapter at Eastern Michigan and 51 at the Theta Zeta Chapter at Colorado State.

The Gamma Epsilon Chapter at San Jose State University rechartered on November 13 with nearly 140 brothers in attendance for the celebration.

Delta Sig celebrated the 110th anniversary of the founding of the Fraternity. Many local chapters and alumni associations held events commemorating Founders Day 2009.

Three chapters supported their local communities:

Delta Sig closed its online community called the Delta Sigma Phi Circle, citing a duplication of efforts between it and two other online communities – Facebook and LinkedIn.

Delta Sigma Phi to Close Branded Online Community

Delta Sigma Phi announces today that it will be closing its members’ only online community called the Delta Sigma Phi Circle effective December 31, 2009.

According to Executive Director, Scott Wiley, the Fraternity’s rationale for closing the community was twofold. “We have found that a great deal of our members are already connecting and communicating in more trafficked online communities like LinkedIn and Facebook. In order to avoid duplication of our efforts, we have chosen to push members to our presences on those already popular platforms as opposed to forcing them to come to us to make their connections,” he said.

To replace the Circle, Delta Sigma Phi has developed presences on both Facebook and LinkedIn, with growing constituencies in each of these platforms. Delta Sig’s Facebook Fan page has nearly 5,500 followers, and the Fraternity’s LinkedIn group has over 2,500 members connecting on a regular basis. These two social media platforms have essentially the same capabilities of the Delta Sigma Phi Circle, and allow members to easily connect and network much in the same way as the Circle.

To answer some of the likely questions that will arise from this message:

How will we connect with fellow Delta Sigs without the Circle? Delta Sigma Phi has established presences on the two most trafficked online communities today, Facebook and LinkedIn, and also has presences on a number of additional social media tools like Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube. All of these tools offer outstanding opportunities to regularly connect with your fellow Delta Sigs – likely a better opportunity than the Circle since only 7% of brothers even created a profile in the initial three years of its existence.

Is Delta Sig planning to develop something similar in the future to replace the Circle? No, not at this time. Tools like Facebook and LinkedIn allow members to connect in much the same way the Circle did, thus duplicating those capabilities within another online platform really doesn’t make sense.

If cost was a factor in this decision, what will be the annual cost savings we will see? The Fraternity will save $10,000 in annual licensing fees that instead will be redirected towards other social media initiatives consistent with our mission of building better men.

2009 Founders Day Message from the National President

Brothers:

On this day 110 years ago, a number of men came together in an alcove on the campus of the City College of New York with a dream of starting a Fraternity. Today, their dream continues to be a reality, as Delta Sigma Phi has initiated more than 115,000 men with a continued mission of building better men.

As the Fraternity’s national president, I’m proud to have an opportunity to help the dream of our founding brothers continue to be a reality, not only today, but as we look five, ten, and even twenty years into the future. However, my efforts are not enough. I’d like to encourage you to think about ways in which you can make a difference for the brothers 110 years from today, much like our founding brothers did in 1899 in New York.

There are a few other things that I’d like you to remember today, as we all celebrate the 110th anniversary of our great Fraternity.

First, let us make certain we know that we are a part of a phenomenal brotherhood. Delta Sigma Phi continues to develop excellent leaders and better men, which I hope makes you proud to be a Delta Sig on a daily basis.

Second, I hope you will think about the Fraternity’s Ritual and the bond we share often, remembering that the Ritual can guide you in every decision you make. The Ritual is a powerful tool you can utilize in your everyday life, and is the bond that we all share as Delta Sigs. It’s a tool that has helped me tremendously, and I have no doubt it can help you as well.

Third, remember what got you to where you are today. In many cases, your brothers were integral in the success of your career and even your life. You may have even had someone from the Fraternity who inspired you to become who you are today. I’d like to encourage you to take a moment to reach out to a fellow brother who made a difference in your life, to let them know about the effect they had on you and to reconnect with them. It will not only strengthen your relationship, but the bond of brotherhood as well.

Lastly, let us remember what got Delta Sigma Phi here – the dedication and continued support of you, our brothers across the world. The fact is, without the support of brothers over the 110 years since our founding, Delta Sigma Phi’s mission of building better men would be nothing more than a dream. Because of the continued support of brothers from yesterday and today, the mission is a reality, much like that of our founding brothers from years ago.

This year has been a difficult one for many of us, but I am proud to tell you that the Fraternity is as strong as ever. I am more than sure our founding brothers would be extremely proud about the progress we’ve made in the last 110 years, and I encourage you to continue supporting Delta Sigma Phi’s mission regularly so the Fraternity can be even stronger 110 years from now.

Gamma Rho Supports The American Red Cross

On Saturday, December 5, the Gamma Rho Colony at Gannon University held its Inaugural Mr. Delta Sig Auction, raising over $500 for The American Red Cross' Erie Chapter.

The event began with members of the colony showing their talent in a dance to Jay Sean’s latest hit, “Down.” The group then had a question & answer session with each of the participating brothers to allow the attendees to get to know them better.

The actual auction followed, where dinner with each brother was auctioned off, starting at $10. The top earners were Bridger Philson, Gannon '09, and Brandon Wiley, Gannon '09, who each had over $100 bid on them. The winning bidders and their Mr. Delta Sig participant will have dinner on Friday, December 11 at a local Erie restaurant.

Nearly 100 people attended this first time event, which was emceed by the colony's Chapter Advisor, Rev. Jason Glover. Glover also served as the auctioneer.

Gamma Epsilon Chapter Receives Award on Campus

In less than a year after returning to campus, the newly re-chartered Gamma Epsilon Chapter at San Jose State University has made quite a splash. Recently, the chapter received the Primo Progress Award from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at San Jose State.

The award was presented to the chapter for their efforts to continually progress towards becoming an outstanding chapter. It was provided at the recent All Greek Winter Mixer on campus, and was one of only two awards presented that night to Fraternities.

Chapter President Marco Henry Negrete, San Jose State '07, said, “The Chapter is using this as extra motivation to strive for the "best chapter" award at the end of the school year.”

In addition, two Gamma Epsilon brothers were sworn into their new Interfraternity Council (IFC) Executive Board positions at the event. Ryan Whitchurch, San Jose State '07, will serve as the IFC’s Vice President of Administration, and Leroy Madarang, San Jose State '09, will serve as IFC Secretary. These are the first brothers to serve on the San Jose State IFC Executive Board in roughly 20 years.

Delta Sig Announces Top Recruiter Nominees

Over the last month, Delta Sigma Phi's undergraduate chapter and colony leaders were asked to nominate up to two members who have excelled in recruitment on the local level.The top recruiters from all of the nominees will be invited to participate as undergraduate facilitators at The Summit, which takes place January 8-10 in Indianapolis.

The Summit is a program for chapter presidents and recruitment chairmen aimed at providing education and training on effective leadership, motivation and personal development to aid in the growth and development of Delta Sig chapters and colonies.

During the two week nomination process, 55 brothers from 34 chapters and colonies were nominated, and will all be entered into a pool for potential future use as sources for recruitment content here on the web site or in The Carnation magazine.

Eta Xi and Beta Nu Chapters Support The American Red Cross

During the Fall 2009 semester, the Brothers of the Eta Xi Chapter at Towson University participated in two community service events. The first was an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Towson's campus. The members donated blood, greeted and signed in participants, aided nurses when needed, and provided care for donors while also managing donor flow. Chapter vice president Aaron Browner said, “We helped The American Red Cross collect over 227 pints of blood with over 200 individuals who donated. These blood donations will help save 681 hospital patients’ lives.”

The Eta Xi Chapter also organized a SeeSaw for charity event which the Brothers of Delta Sigma Phi seesawed nonstop for 48 straight hours. Browner said, “We raised over $900 for the Semi Colon Group, a Colon Cancer awareness group, and the Bodo Initiative, a charity striving to help the Kenyan children of Bodo gain the higher education they deserve.”

The Beta Nu Chapter at Fresno State donated $2,465 to the Save A Family Relief Fund within The American Red Cross’ Central Valley Region. These funds will be used to help families in the local community that have lost their homes to house fires.

The chapter organized several activities with other sororities and fraternities on campus for a weeklong philanthropy project. The week ended with a Powder Puff football tournament with teams formed at each of the local sororities. Each team was coached by a group of Delta Sigs from Beta Nu Chapter.

Ellen Knapp, Chief Executive Officer for The American Red Cross’ Central Valley Region said, “We commend theses students for their volunteer hours and their commitment to the community.”

Final Fall 2009 Recruitment Update

Delta Sigma Phi's chapters and colonies excelled in recruitment during the Fall 2009 semester, with four chapters and colonies surpassing the 40-man recruitment mark.

Two of the four top recruiting groups were newly re-developed colonies at universities where the organization has been dormant. The Theta Zeta Colony at Colorado State finished the Fall on top with over 50 men recruited, and were followed in third by the Gamma Tau Colony at Eastern Michigan with 44 new members recruited.

Alpha Alpha and Beta Kappa Chapters Support The American Red Cross

The Alpha Alpha Chapter at the University of Illinois and the Beta Kappa Chapter at the University of Alabama both recently supported The American Red Cross in their communities, but in different ways.

On November 11, the Alpha Alpha Chapter hosted a Blood Drive at its campus' YMCA from 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. The event surpassed its goal of 17 units of blood, collecting a total of 27 units in only three hours. Chapter philanthropy and community service chairman Clayton Carr said, "A total of 27
units were gathered throughout the day, 19 of which came from first time donors. The American Red Cross is applauded for making such a joint effort so easy and gratifying."

Earlier in the semester, on Friday, September 25, the Beta Kappa Chapter held its second annual Miss Sorority Row event in Tuscaloosa, raising $10,200 for charity - $5,100 of which went to the local chapter of The American Red Cross. According to Chapter vice president Ely Jones, "All of the 16 Panhellenic sororities on our campus participated in some way except for one, either by entering contestants or donating. Delta Delta Delta, Phi Mu, and Alpha Chi Omega won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively. In all, 50% of the money raised went to The American Red Cross, while 25%, 15%, and 10% went to the three winners' charities. Our goal is to raise over $11,000 next fall through ticket sales and donations." The event was attended by approximately 1,050 people, filling the local Bama Theater.

Congratulations to these chapters for making a difference for The American Red Cross, and for the other charities that were supported.

Registration for The Summit Opens

The third annual Summit program will take place from January 8-10, 2010 at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre Hotel in downtown Indianapolis.

The Summit, a leadership program for Delta Sigma Phi’s chapter presidents and recruitment chairmen, is an incredible training opportunity to gain valuable skills in pursuit of building America’s Leading Fraternity.

The Summit will focus on two key chapter/colony leaders—the President and Recruitment Chairman. It will not only cover best practices, but will also provide education and training on effective leadership, motivation and personal development. Participating leaders will leave motivated to create change and initiate action-oriented results to aid in the growth and development of Delta Sig chapters and colonies. The Summit is divided into educational tracks for the President and Recruitment Chairman and includes sessions on Ritual and Leading with Values, Marketing and Image, Risk Awareness, Recruitment, Personal Development and more.

There are no registration or travel costs for this event, with attendees only being responsible for lodging and non-included meal expenses. Each chapter/colony should register its chapter president and recruitment chairman who will be responsible for leading the chapter during the Summer and Fall 2010 recruitment periods.

Delta Epsilon and Alpha Lambda Chapters Support Their Communities

Last month, the Delta Epsilon Chapter at Missouri University of Science & Technology held its inaugural Hot Shots event, which promotes alcohol awareness and substance abuse prevention with knowledge sharing, games and events. The event is a late night series of sporting tournaments, funded by Joe’s PEERS, an organization that provides funding to events that support health and wellness. In the past, the event was sponsored by Joe’s PEERS, but with the chapter’s exceptional work at the event in the past, Delta Epsilon is now the event’s sponsor. This year, the chapter hosted racquetball, volleyball, basketball, ping pong and badminton tournaments, with music provided by chapter members who work at the campus radio station. The event had a great turnout, including the Director of Greek Life, Tiffany Kroeze.

On Thursday November 5, the Alpha Lambda Chapter at Millikin University hosted a philanthropy event called Big Man On Campus, and raised over $500 for The American Red Cross. Big Man On Campus is an event in which male students on campus compete in five different areas. Nine men representing different university organizations competed in categories such as: Spelling Bee, Pick-up Line Delivery, Talent Duet, Question & Answer, and a Swim Wear Competition. The winner was decided by judges’ scores from each category. All $500 will be donated to the local chapter of The American Red Cross.

Theta Epsilon Chapter Raises $1,400 for CureSearch

The Theta Epsilon Chapter at Wingate University raised $1,400 for the child cancer research organization CureSearch on Saturday, October 31, 2009. The Delta Sigs raised the money by organizing and selling tickets to their very own Halloween Bash at Spiro’s Hilltop Bistro and Bar in Monroe, NC. The chapter's goal in the weeks leading to this event was to raise $500 in donations for CureSearch. According to the event organizer, Ryan Sangster, “This event was a success because we analyzed how this event was organized in the past and raised the bar.” Chapter vice president, Zach Wallace says of the event, “While it is great we raised so much money for an organization trying to find the cure to cancer, we could not have done that if it were not for the support from Wingate University’s Student Government Association, the Wingate students themselves, and the Greek community as a whole.” This semester’s Halloween Bash compliments the chapter's 2009 Swing-for-the-Cure Alumni Golf Tournament, which raised $1,200 for CureSearch during the spring semester.

Gamma Delta Chapter Helps Reduce Carbon Emissions on Campus

The Gamma Delta Chapter at Washington State University is spearheading a campus-wide effort to reduce energy usage on its campus. The chapter is taking part in an initiative led by Hewlett-Packard to see which campus out of the 15 competing can save the most energy during the month of November. The effort is a nationwide event where organizations within universities will compete to see who can reduce carbon emmisions. Whichever organization downloads the most applications called Power to Change widgets and saves the most energy will win. Theta Omega Chapter Raises $250 for Local Humane Society

The Theta Omega Chapter at Georgia Southern University held its inaugural Delta Sig Dunk event to benefit the chapter's local Humane Society. The event raised $250, and according to chapter president John Balmforth, "This event, although small compared to our usual philanthropies, has great potential for the future, and we will continue to help the Humane Society in any way we can."

Gamma Xi Chapter Stands Up to Cancer

The Gamma Xi Chapter at the University of North Texas is in the midst of a 100 hour stand against cancer on its campus, which should come to an end on Thursday, October 29 at 10:00 pm.

The event, which started at 6:00 pm on Sunday, October 25, is meant to raise funds for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Brothers and others are standing on a pyramid that they built for the event, which is located just outside the campus' University Union, and the chapter is hoping to raise $4,000 for the cause.

Two Chapters from North Carolina Hold Community Service Events

The Epsilon Phi Chapter at East Carolina University recently held a community service event in which they washed the cars of the Greenville Police Department. According to Chapter President Brian Moulton, East Carolina ’06, “The reason we did this is because our Chapter Advisor, Dallas Warren, East Carolina ’03, is a Greenville Police Officer. He really helps our chapter and the Greenville community a lot.” Nearly 30 brothers and new members took part in the four hour event that was held at the Department of Public Works building in Greenville, NC.

Four members of the Delta Zeta Chapter at High Point University recently participated in a philanthropy event at the local Chick-Fil-A restaurant where they dressed up as mascots for The American Red Cross - disaster dog, blood hound, blood drop and first aid fox. The brothers were at the restaurant to take part in an event with the Red Cross where they painted safety-related pictures with children and waving at children in the drive-thru. Alumnus to Receive Prestigious Award

Kyle Pendleton, Ohio State '89, who professionally serves as the Assistant Dean of Students at Purdue University, will receive the 2009 Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Fraternity and Sorority Advisors at the association's Annual Meeting in December.

The award was created in 1985, and re-named for AFA’s second Executive Director, Sue Kraft Fussell, in 2006. The purpose of the award is to recognize individuals who have exhibited high professional standards and achievements in fraternity/sorority advising and outstanding achievements in one or more of the following areas: service to AFA; programming and/or service which reaches beyond the recipient's campus; development and research activities; and/or service to the college and fraternity/sorority communities.

Pendleton, who has been working in fraternity and sorority affairs for over 15 years, started his career as a leadership consultant for Delta Sigma Phi upon graduating from Ohio State. Before coming to Purdue, Pendleton worked in Greek Life positions at the University of South Carolina (while he received his M.Ed. in Student Personnel Administration), San Diego State University, Columbia University, and Northwestern University.

His professional activities are numerous, including serving as the lead facilitator for LeaderShape, as a member for the Northeast Greek Leadership Association Executive Board, as a Dean for the Delta Sigma Phi Leadership Institute, and as a founder for UIFI:PURDUE, the nation's first campus based session of the NIC program. In addition, Pendleton served in 2007 as the president of the Association of Fraternity and Sorority Advisors.

In addition to his upcoming award, he was awarded Beta Theta Pi’s Interfraternalism Award at their 169th General Convention in Dallas, TX.

Fall '09 Victory Report #2 - Five New Chapters Join the Top 10

Since our last installment of the Fall 2009 Victory Report for recruitment, a number of groups have entered the Top 10. They include Theta Rho at the University of Oregon, Delta Delta at Purdue University, Epsilon Rho at Cal Poly SLO, Alpha Pi at Michigan State University, and Epsilon Omega at Illinois State University.

The newly reorganized Theta Zeta Colony at Colorado State University continues to lead the way, adding another new member since our last report. The colony now stands at 51 pinned new members.

Two other chapters are following close behind. Impressively, the Beta Kappa Chapter at the University of Alabama has pinned 47 new members, and the Beta Psi Chapter at Arizona State University has pinned 43.

Recent Undergraduate Member and Chapter News

A number of Delta Sig chapters and individuals are doing great things on their campuses and in their communities. Read more about what's happening below.

The Alpha Gamma Chapter at Georgia Tech hosted a Red Cross Blood Drive in August that collected 504 pints of blood, which broke the Georgia Tech record for number of units collected.

For the remainder of the Fall Semester, the Alpha Epsilon Chapter at Duke University will be participating in a platelet drive. Their drive has garnered interest from other campus fraternities, and they are hoping other Delta Sig chapters will join them in their worthy cause. Read more about platelet donation here.

Tim Martin, Millikin ’07, chapter president of the Alpha Lambda Chapter at Millikin University, was named Homecoming King on campus the weekend of October 16-18.

The Zeta Omicron Chapter at CSU East Bay garnered its largest pledge class in its history, pinning 20 men this Fall.

The Theta Omega Chapter at Georgia Southern University recently placed second in Homecoming on campus, and has held a number of recent events, including the Delta Sig Dunk to benefit the Bulloch County Humane Society, and an RHA Cookout to enhance relations with campus Resident Hall leaders. The chapter will also be assisting the Humane Society with its upcoming Pet Fun Day, where brothers will be setting up and tearing down, selling food, and walking and washing dogs.

The Theta Zeta Colony at Colorado State University placed third overall in Homecoming, which included second place in the Homecoming Float competition and second place in the Greek Decathalon out of 18 fraternities on campus.

Delta Sig Seeks Expansion Coordinators

Are you graduating after the Winter Semester or at the end of the academic year and looking for a job? Do you want to help the Fraternity grow on college campuses around the country?

If so, consider working for the Fraternity as an expansion coordinator, where you will have the opportunity to work with staff and volunteers to successfully recruit men for expansion and redevelopment projects, which increases Delta Sigma Phi’s presence on campuses nationwide.

There will be three positions available - one starting on January 4, 2010, and two on June 14, 2010. Deadline to apply will be October 21 for all three positions.

Gamma Psi Chapter Raises Money for Breast Cancer Research

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the brothers of the Gamma Psi Chapter at Morningside College did their part to help raise money to fight the disease.

The chapter held its second annual Taking a Stand Against Breast Cancer event, where it raised $2,500 that will go to St. Luke’s Screening and Breast Exam Center.

Taking a Stand Against Breast Cancer is an event where brothers stand on a box in the middle of the Morningside campus for 140 straight hours, collecting donations and raising awareness of the deadly disease.

In addition to this event, the chapter has raised the most money for charity on its campus at this point in the academic year, and according to chapter president Tyrel Drey, “This, combined with some of the charities we do closer to Christmas and a few of the things we have scheduled for second semester, should keep us cemented as one of the most prominent organizations on campus.”

Fraternity Appoints Additional Grand Councilman

Delta Sigma Phi is proud to announce the appointment of Tom Cycyota to the Fraternity’s Grand Council. Cycyota will fill the remaining two years of immediate past president Mike Hoffman’s term, who was re-elected at the 2007 Delta Sigma Phi Convention.

Cycyota is a 1977 initiate of the Fraternity’s Alpha Alpha Chapter at the University of Illinois, and professionally is the president and CEO of AlloSource, Inc. AlloSource is a mission driven organization that maximizes the possibilities from human tissue donation.

According to Delta Sigma Phi’s national president Chris Edmonds, “We are excited to have someone the caliber of Tom Cycyota join our Grand Council. Tom’s additional board work and his professional accomplishments will be tremendous assets as we continue to work toward becoming America’s Leading Fraternity.”

During his tenure at AlloSource, both Cycyota and the company have been recognized for numerous business accolades, including being a two�]time finalist for the Best Companies to Work for in Colorado, Centennial’s Large Company of the Year, a finalist for Colorado Ethics in Business Samaritan Institute Award, the Healthcare Innovator of the Year selected by the Denver Business Journal and more.

Prior to joining AlloSource, Cycyota was the Vice President of Alternate Care Business with Johnson & Johnson Medical (JJM). In this Board�]level role, he led the Company’s movement into the alternate healthcare market. He was formerly the Worldwide Director, Marketing, Wound Management for JJM, and also previously worked as Vice President of Marketing and Materials Management with New Dimensions in Medicine. Early in his career, he spent ten years at Kendall Healthcare Products Company.

Cycyota holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Loyola University in Chicago. He sits on the Board of Donate Life America, The Limb Preservation Foundation, and the Donor Awareness Council. He resides in Colorado, where he is an avid hiker and volunteer with the Boy Scouts, with his wife, Cyndy, and three sons, Hank, Tim, and TJ.

Beta Kappa Holds Very Successful Fundraising Event

Another year, another great philanthropy event from the brothers at the Beta Kappa Chapter at the University of Alabama. The brothers held their annual Miss Sorority Row event on campus Friday, September 25, raising $10,000 for a variety of charities in the process.

The chapter donated percentages of the event's proceeds to the following charities:

50% to The American Red Cross
25% to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, the national philanthropy of the winner's sorority -Delta Delta Delta
15% to the Children's Miracle Network, the national philanthropy of the first runner up's sorority - Phi Mu
10% to Domestic Violence prevention, the national philanthropy of the second runner up's sorority - Alpha Chi Omega

Alumni Raise Money and Donate Food to Washington, DC Church Group

Alumni from the Beta Phi Chapter at St. Francis University raised nearly $3,000 and donated food to the Missionaries of Charity Convent at their summer pig roast event held earlier this summer.

The second annual event brought together alumni and friends of the chapter according to Garrett Kovacevic, ACB President for the group. "We had 40 brothers and roughly 125+ friends and family of our local chapter attend for a fun day of camaraderie, food and fun."

In all, the event raised $3,000 and members donated food to the organization, receiving a warm thank you note from one of the sisters of the group. In the note, she said, "May God reward you and bless you for your generosity for the poor in D.C. Southeast. We are all praying for you and for your families."

With the potential for the H1N1 Flu to become a pandemic, it's important that undergraduate members who live and collaborate together regularly are aware of the potential implications of this situation, and how they can best react should it show up in your chapter.

If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. Be prepared in case you get sick and need to stay home for a week or so; a supply of over-the-counter medicines, alcohol-based hand rubs. tissues and other related items might could be useful and help avoid the need to make trips out in public while you are sick and contagious.

Fraternity Launches All In for Delta Sig Movement

On Tuesday, August 18, the Fraternity launched the All In for Delta Sig movement, an effort to re-engage all brothers to the cause of supporting the Fraternity to meet its long-term goals laid out in the Vision 2025 strategic plan.

One of those goals is specific to the number of engaged and trained alumni volunteers, 2,500, and this initiative is an effort to help begin to build a volunteer base of loyal and dedicated alumni and friends of the organization.

Through this movement and effort, Delta Sig is looking for brothers who are willing to help the Fraternity achieve in the three main areas of the Strategic Plan - Developing Stronger Leaders, Buiding Stronger Chapters, and Being America's Leading Fraternity.

According to new national president Chris Edmonds, UAB '88, "Our goal is to go beyond the typical Fraternity, and to be better than the typical man. Our strategic plan calls for us to become extraordinary, and I believe that through hard work and dedication, we will be America's Leading Fraternity."

Inaugural McKee Scholarships Presented at the 2009 Convention

The inagural winners of the Hensel and Jeanette McKee Scholarships were announced at the 2009 Delta Sig Convention, held July 22-26 in St. Louis.

These scholarships are available to both Delta Sigma Phi undergraduate students, and alumni who are pursuing graduate degrees, and are provided through the generosity of Hensel and Jeanette McKee to further their desire to assist young men in pursing undergraduate and post graduate studies. Brother McKee was initiated into the Alpha Omega chapter at the University of Washington in 1930.

Follow the Convention's Progress Online

The Delta Sig Convention gets underway tomorrow, Tuesday, July 22, and there are a number of ways for Delta Sigs to follow the action.

A number of brothers will be "tweeting" about the event using the microblogging service Twitter. You can read their tweets and learn about what's happening from participants' perspectives by going to http://search.twitter.com and searching for #dspconv09. All participants are being instructed to use the tag #dspconv09 to show that they are all relating to the Delta Sig Convention.

Also, throughout the Convention, you can check out the Fraternity's official Convention blog at http://deltasigconvention2009.wordpress.com. There will be posts updating the events, announcing award winners, telling about interesting things that have occurred, and giving a good overview about the event.

Fraternity Hires Two New Expansion Coordinators

Delta Sigma Phi is proud to welcome Dave Hoffman, Kansas State '05, and Doug Sweeney, Stetson '06, to its staff. The two were hired and began work at the Fraternity Headquarters in late June.

A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Hoffman joined Delta Sigma Phi in 2005 as a member of the Alpha Upsilon Chapter at Kansas State University. While an undergraduate member of the chapter, he served as the alumni relations director and pledge educator. To read his full bio, click here.

Sweeney served the Alpha Chi Chapter as the pledge class president, athletics chairman, historian, recruitment chairman, social chairman, and was the founder of the chapter’s web site. To read his full bio, click here.

Hoffman and Sweeney join John Regner, Millikin '05, on the expansion team. All three will be responsible for establishing new chapters and colonies of Delta Sigma Phi at colleges and universities around the nation.

2009 Convention Updates

We’re now only 23 days away from the official start of the 56th and Biennial Convention of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. We’re excited that you’ll be joining us in St. Louis later in July.

As we approach the Convention, we will be sending regular updates to remind you of important information before you make the trip to St. Louis.

Agenda Updates

The Convention will feature two new events in 2009, as well as a number of receptions and educational sessions meant to help attendees become better men.

Vegas Night on the Nile – This event will take place Thursday, July 23, and will include Vegas-style table games like poker, blackjack, roulette and craps. Each attendee will receive chips as they enter the event, and prizes will be provided at the end of the night for brothers with the most chips. There will be food and a cash bar available at this event, so be sure to attend to spend a fun evening with your brothers!

Alumni Appreciation Reception – The 2009 Alumni Appreciation Reception will feature the wine of host Justin Baldwin, San Jose State ’67. Baldwin is the owner and proprietor of the award-winning Justin Vineyards in Paso Robles, California, and he will be providing four different wines for a tasting at the event. All alumni and guests are invited to attend this reception, which will take place on Thursday, July 23 from 4:30 – 6:00 pm.

Undergraduate Appreciation Reception – Another new event for 2009, the Undergraduate Appreciation Reception will take place on Friday, July 24 from 8:00 – 9:00 pm immediately before the Pilgrim’s Degree. It will be an opportunity for undergraduates to network with one another, and for the Grand Council and National Fraternity to show their appreciation for all of the hard work put forth by the undergraduates during the last biennium.

Educational Sessions –Arrive early to take advantage of Wednesday afternoon’s sessions, and be sure to check out Friday’s outstanding speakers, Jack Needham for Alumni and Jason Welch for Undergraduates. On Saturday, four more sessions will take place during the afternoon for both alumni and undergraduates, so we hope you’ll take advantage of them all. Be sure to click here to look at the latest agenda, which includes all of the educational sessions that will take place.

Kappa Delta Undergraduate Becomes Student Government Association President

Brandon Carroll, Virginia Tech '08, was named Student Government Association President on campus in mid-April. In his position, he will represent the student body on campus in its interactions with the university administration.

We recently caught up with Carroll and did the following e-mail interview.

Delta Sig: When were you elected? When does your term begin/end?

Carroll: I was elected on April 1, 2009, however results were not announced until April 3rd. I was officially sworn into office on April 13, 2009 at 5:30 pm. My term has officially already begun. My term will end around mid April next year.

Delta Sig: Tell us about your main responsibilities of your position.

Carroll: My main responsibility is to represent the undergraduate student body at Virginia Tech. I am their voice to the administration. Also, I oversee an executive team of around 40+ people, not including committee members. SGA is the largest student organization at VT. We have programs like the Big Event, which this year had over 5500 participants. Also, we have Relay for Life, which raised over $500,000, becoming the number #1 Relay in the country. Also, we have Hokie Effect, which has sold as many as 96,000 shirts. I have the vision and direction, but the executive members are the ones who will deserve all of the credit.

Delta Sig: What are your goals for the position?

Carroll: Our goals for this position are simple – to represent every voice at Virginia Tech. Often, a select few talk so much that the minority are unable to be heard. We want to change that. We want to find ways to amplify the voices of the minority, so that every perspective can be heard on campus. Also, we want to ensure that the students’ voices are respected at Virginia Tech. Our platform was based around the students. We actually let the students choose our number one platform between Transportation, Diversity, Traditions, and First-Year Experience. The students chose Transportation, which means that will be our number one focus. Also, we ran on Sustainability, Voice, and Lifestyle. We hope to make Virginia Tech more sustainable by instituting new programs and working with various environmental groups to make VT greener. As I said earlier, the voice is the single most important aspect about our vision within Student Government. Lastly, we ran on a lifestyle platform. For this, our goal is to make an impact on the students’ daily lives. Something as simple as having less time to wait in line for food will affect one’s lifestyle.

All in all, we hope to empower the student body, so that we can work together to make VT the best that it can possibly be. We hope to unite the campus for progressive, positive change.

My personal goal is to reinvent the role of President. I want this role to be less about status and recognition and more about focusing on making the school better, regardless of who receives the credit.

Delta Sig: Why did you decide to run?

Carroll: I decided to run because SGA is my passion. Service is important to me. Serving the student body is the most important thing to me. I want SGA to be considered the most open, actively listening organization on campus. I want students to feel comfortable talking to us about the issues on campus. Building a strong team dynamic was critical to me, since I knew it would allow us to best serve the needs of the students!

We have an opportunity to accomplish some groundbreaking initiatives next year for the student body. We have very successful programs already, but we have an opportunity to ensure that the students’ voices are respected on this campus. We have the opportunity to unite for progressive positive change. Knowing this – is what keeps me up late at night and helps me wake up early every morning. It is the driving force that motivates me.

Delta Sig: Has your experience in the Fraternity helped you prepare for this position?

Carroll: I actually rushed Delta Sig because of a former SGA President, Adeel Khan. After April 16th (Editor's Note: the 2007 shooting tragedy at Virginia Tech), I saw his courage and calm and collective demeanor – it inspired me. My story is actually very interesting. I almost transferred from Virginia Tech after my first semester. I wasn’t myself. I am from a very small town of just 5,500 people, and I have known all of my best friends since 1st grade. So, to come to a school with roughly 23,000 students was intimidating to say the least. I tried so hard to fit in that I became uncomfortable with whom I was becoming.

After April 16th, I saw the resilience of Adeel and the Hokie community, and I was extremely moved. I ended up applying for SGA because it was something I was passionate about. Then, Adeel mentioned Delta Sig to me and I came to some rush events, and every guy was genuine and showed not told what true brotherhood is all about. The brotherhood gave me the confidence that I could run for such a prestigious position, and I am forever grateful for their help.

Delta Sig: What else are you involved in on campus and what positions have you held in the Kappa Delta Chapter?

Carroll: I am a Mentor for the McNair Scholars Mentor Program, where I help low-income high school students as they begin thinking about college. Currently, I act as the Directory of Publicity for the Class of 2010. Last year, I helped market ring sales and Ring Dance, one of our campuses most cherished traditions. My main job was to oversee and execute all of the marketing from selling rings up to the actual event.

I am currently one of the co-founders of a soon to be non-profit organization Actively Caring 4 People, an organization that inspires people to incorporate random acts of kindness into their daily lives. We’ve given out 1,600 bands that people can give to others when they see someone do an intentional act of kindness The whole point is to pay it forward. I firmly believe the true testament of a man’s character is how he treats someone who does him no good.

I’ve always been an active member of Delta Sig and supported our strong values grounded in our Brotherhood, however I have never held any leadership positions. We have so many talented brothers in the Kappa Delta Chapter – I have learned so much from each and every one of them.

This past year, I was the Assistant Director of Hokies on Fire for the Student Government Association. We made Blackout shirts and really enhanced the atmosphere for our basketball games. In the past, I was a Resident Adviser in the largest all male dorm on the east coast, Pritchard Hall. I mentored 35 freshman and helped transition them from high school to college.

I have been Co-Director of Marketing with the Student Government Association, where I oversaw all of our marketing operations, including selling 96,000 Hokie Effect t-shirts. I used to be active with the Environmental Coalition – I brought a speaker to talk about the Chesapeake Bay, which is close to my hometown in Maryland. I used to be active in VTU by helping plan concerts.

Delta Sig: What is your major and year?

Carroll: I am a rising Senior, studying to be a Certified Financial Planner, while minoring in Leadership.

Delta Sig: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Carroll: I have learned so much through this process. I have learned that you can’t please everyone. Delta Sig has really been a second family to me. The guys are always there for you, no matter what. I have never been prouder to be a Delta Sig.

Kappa Delta Chapter at Virginia Tech Wins Four Awards

The Kappa Delta Chapter at Virginia Tech received four awards at its Greek Awards Banquet at the end of the Spring 2009 semester, the most of any single fraternity on campus.

The chapter won the Brotherhood of the Year Chapter Choice Award, which is an award based on nominations by every fraternity and sorority on campus.

Other awards included: Outstanding Academic Programing, Outstanding Associate Membership Educational Program, and the Academy of Excellence.

Recent Delta Sig Alumnus Receives Award from California Parks & Recreation Association

Andrew Watson, Fresno State ’07, recently was presented with the Outstanding Graduate Award from District 7 of California Parks and Recreation Society.

About winning the award, Watson said, “It was a huge surprise and I am honored. I have worked hard and it’s nice to get an award and feel appreciated for the effort and time I have put in.”

However, Watson was not on hand to receive his award. He was in his home country of Norway completing his internship with one of the country’s top amusement/festival companies. He began full time work at that company on June 1 after receiving his degree from Fresno State in Recreation and Leisure with a certificate in special event planning.

About his experience in the Fraternity, Watson said, “If it hadn't been for my Big Brother, Arthur Sulcer, and Matt Ruiz I would never have joined the Greek life community. I regret not joining before, because the experience has been unique, and I have had some of my best moments in Fresno in the house. And I feel very unique, because besides me and my pledge brother Johan Gressberg, current president at Beta Nu, I don't think there are many Norwegians in Delta Sigma Phi's list serve.”

Alumnus to be Named Outstanding Electrical & Computer Engineer

John McDonald, Purdue '70, will receive the Outstanding Electrical & Computer Engineer Award from Purdue University 's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The award will be presented at the 2009 OECE Awards Banquet on October 2, 2009 in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The award was established in 1992 to recognize alumni who have demonstrated exemplary accomplishments, leadership and service to the community. Only 176 alumni have received the award among over 20,000 graduates of the school.

McDonald has had a stellar career in engineering. He has served in major leadership roles within IEEE, the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology, was formerly the Vice President for Power System Automation for KEMA, Inc., and currently serves as the General Manager for Marketing for GE Energy T&D. In addition, he has spoken and given seminars across the world in power engineering.

McDonald resides in the Atlanta area with his wife.

Former National President Wins Prestigious Award

On May 14, Former Delta Sig National President, Brigadier General Edward F. Rodriguez, Texas '86, was awarded the 2009 Robinson O. Everett Distinguished Life Service Award from the Judge Advocates Association. This is the association's highest award.

According to the association's web site, "the Judge Advocates Association has established its Distinguished Life Service Award for those very special individuals who have demonstrated a lifetime of (1) dedicated service to the principles of military and veterans law and justice and (2) devotion to and furtherance of the mission and objectives of the Association and its members."

Rodriguez was a longtime Air Force Judge Advocate General officer, and currently is a private practice attorney in the Washington, DC area. He is the tenth winner of the award since its establishment in 2000.

Undergraduate Chapters Recognized on Campus

The Beta Nu Chapter at CSU, Fresno received five awards at its Greek Awards Banquet earlier this month - the most of any single fraternity on campus. The award winners were:

In addition, the Delta Omega Chapter at Cleveland State University received the Organization Service Award on its campus, which is based upon total hours of service and number of participants in events organized with Student Life.

In addition, member Nick Hardy, Cleveland State '04, was named Greek Man of the Year on campus by the Greek Alumni Council. The award is based upon involvement in the Greek community, leadership, community service, and academics. Throughout his undergraduate career, Hardy has served as the Delta Omega Chapter's treasurer and president, as well as the Greek Council President, a position that oversees the Interfraternity Council and NPHC.

Congratulations to these chapters and brothers for receiving their awards.

Delta Sig Headquarters Begins Summer Hours

The Fraternity Headquarters' hours have changed for the summer due to undergraduate members' summer break. As of today, the new hours of operation are:

Monday - Thursday - 8:00 am - 4:00 pm EDT
Friday - 8:00 am - Noon EDT

These hours will last from May 11 - August 28, so please keep them in mind if you're trying to reach the Fraternity's staff during this timeframe.

Delta Sig Announces Fall 2009 Expansion and Redevelopment Efforts

Delta Sigma Phi is happy to announce that it will expand on five campuses during the Fall 2009 semester. These expansion projects include three redevelopments of past chapters, as well as two new expansions to campuses upon which the Fraternity has never had a presence.

Redevelopment Efforts

Eastern Michigan University – The previous home of Delta Sigma Phi’s Gamma Tau Chapter, which was originally chartered in 1952, will be the eighth active chapter or colony in Michigan. The others include the Tau Chapter at Hillsdale College, Alpha Pi Chapter at Michigan State University, Alpha Tau Chapter at Albion College, Beta Pi Chapter at Michigan Tech, Beta Tau Chapter at Western Michigan University, Epsilon Tau Chapter at Grand Valley State University, and Eta Kappa Chapter at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Colorado State University – The previous home of the Theta Zeta Chapter, which was originally chartered in 1993, will be the second active chapter or colony in Colorado. The other current active colony is the Zeta Kappa Colony at the University of Northern Colorado.

Johnson and Wales University–Denver – The home of a previously non-chartered colony from earlier this decade will be the third current active chapter or colony in Colorado. It will join the Zeta Kappa Colony at the University of Northern Colorado, and another redevelopment project of the Theta Zeta Chapter at Colorado State University.

New Expansions

Binghamton University – Located in Binghamton, New York, Binghamton University will be the Fraternity’s sixth active chapter or colony in New York. They join the Beta Chapter at Columbia University, Epsilon Zeta Chapter at Clarkson University, Eta Eta Chapter at RIT, Theta Gamma Colony at SUNY StonyBrook, and Theta Kappa Chapter at SUNY Oswego.

Indiana University - South Bend – Located in South Bend, Indiana, Indiana University – South Bend will be the Fraternity’s fourth active chapter or colony in the state of Indiana, joining the Delta Delta Chapter at Purdue University, Zeta Lambda Chapter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and the Ball State University Colony at Ball State University.

Newest Colony Raises over $4,000 in Relay for Life

On April 24, 2009, Delta Sigma Phi's newest colony at Binghamton University participated in its campus' twelve hour Relay for Life event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The event was held to raise money for cancer research.

Prior to the event, the colony raised nearly $4,000 to help the cause. An additional $200 was raised on site to add to the pre-event total, as the chapter ran a successful ping pong booth.

As the night drew to a close, the Binghamton colony was awarded first place in money raised, and in all, the event raised nearly $50,000 to help in the fight to eliminate cancer.

The night was a solemn tribute to those who have lost their fight with cancer, but members of the Delta Sigma Phi colony of Binghamton University successfully brought excitement to raising money in the battle to eradicate this disease.

Delta Sig Chapters Clean Up Local Areas

The Zeta Xi Chapter at St. Cloud State University recently took part in their inaugural Adopt-a-Pond clean up, which is an effort in St. Cloud, Minnesota to better the maintenance of the natural habitat of the city.

Fifteen of the chapter members took part in the event at the pond located in front of St. Cloud’s City Public Works building, and were able to do their part in beautifying the area. They collected a great deal of refuse, and felt good about their accomplishments.

According to chapter member Wade Magnusson, “It’s a great opportunity for us to not only get our name out into the community, but also a fantastic way for us to better the wildlife in St. Cloud.”

This effort is on the heels of another Delta Sig Chapter’s efforts at cleaning a local river in their area for Earth Day. The Gamma Zeta Colony at Rutgers University helped clean up the Raritan River on April 18. The story on their efforts can be found by clicking here.

Delta Epsilon Chapter Wins Campus Award

The Delta Epsilon Chapter was recognized with the Most Improved Organization Award, which is given to the organization on the campus of Missouri University of Science & Technology that has improved the most in the past year.

According to the news release announcing the awards, the Delta Epsilon Chapter received the award due to "its significant growth in improving in stature and contributions to the university in the past recent year."

This recognition came at the Sixth Annual Student Leaders' Awards program held on April 16 in the Havener Center (named for Delta Sig Gary Havener, Missouri S&T '59).

Theta Epsilon Chapter Wins Campus Awards

The Theta Epsilon Chapter at Wingate University brought home a number of awards from the campus' annual Greek Awards Banquet on Sunday April 19, including Chapter of the Year.

According to chapter president Josh McGrath, "I am incredibly thrilled for Delta Sigma Phi. In our 16-year history at Wingate University, it is our first Chapter of the Year award! Not only that, but it is only the second time that a male Fraternity has won this prestigious award at Wingate. Our boys have worked hard for this award, and it's great to have them recognized beyond our chapter room."

Past president Justin Pohl said, "It was great for both the chapter and the individuals to be recognized through these honors. The prestigious Julie McSwain Chapter of the Year Award coveted and the chapter could not be prouder, nor more enthused to be given this honor."

Theta Upsilon Chapter Raises Money and Donates Food

The Theta Upsilon Chapter at Texas A&M has been hard at work raising money and donating canned foods for the local community, and is being recognized for it!

In December, the chapter worked with the other 55 Greek letter organizations on its campus to gather 9,500 pounds of food for the local Food Bank. The Greek groups were separated into six small groups, and gathered cans in an effort to raise the most out of all of the groups.

The Theta Upsilon Chapter had the most brothers participate of any group on campus, and was awarded the Spirit Award for this accomplishment. They also raised 2/3 of the cans in their small group - another impressive statistic.

In addition, the chapter held its annual Miss Greek pageant in February, an event that raised money for the Adam Crockett Tumor Fund. The ACT Fund is named in honor of a chapter alumnus who is battling brain cancer. The event included nominess from eight of the campus' sororities who were judged on community service, number of t-shirts and tickets sold, and how they answered a question the night of the event. In all, the event raised $4,000 for the ACT Fund.

2009 Leadership Institute Deadline Extended to April 7

The application process is open for the 2009 Delta Sigma Phi Leadership Institute, which will be held August 7-11, 2009 at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Indiana.

The Leadership Institute is a five-day, intense training and development institute, and is Delta Sigma Phi's flagship leadership development offering.

The cutting-edge curriculum intentionally provides several small group sessions in which participants experience topics in a more intimate setting for discussion and analysis. Topics range from leading organizations, to ethical decision-making, to motivating others to act. The Fraternity selects LI attendees from an elite group of high-caliber men based on their superior academic performance, leadership, campus and community involvement, and letters of recommendation. Undergraduates selected to attend the LI are not only chapter leaders, but many are also leaders in their campus community.

To apply, members must have a proven track record of campus and community involvement, have completed at least two full years of college and still be an undergraudate, and be a member of Delta Sigma Phi in good standing.

The application deadline for the 2009 event has been extended to Tuesday, April 7, and applicants will be notified no later than April 21, 2009 of their status.

Delta Sig Releases Second Spring Recruitment Report

The Gamma Rho Colony at Gannon University leads the way in the second installment of the Spring 2009 Victory Update with 30 recruits.

Gamma Rho is followed by the Alpha Epsilon Chapter at Duke University, and the Gamma Upsilon Chapter at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, each with 21 recruits.

Delta Sig Becomes IFC President at Johnson & Wales University

Greg Wesseldine, Johnson & Wales '07, became the president of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island on February 10.

Wesseldine was elected by the presidents of the campus' seven fraternities and will lead the seven member IFC throughout the 2009-10 academic year. Until the end of the current academic year, he will serve as the vice president of recruitment.

Wesseldine has a number of goals for his term as IFC president, which include expanding upon his efforts this year as the VP of Recruitment, and restructuring the IFC's Executive Board to hold members more accountable.

In addition, he wants to enhance the Greek community as a whole. "I plan on making the Greek community better on campus by working well with the Panhellenic Council, and by planning a lot of community service events. In fact, all of the councils on campus, including the IFC, Panhellenic Council, United Cultural Council (UCC), and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), have a community service event planned for next trimester," he said.

Wesseldine is a graduate of the Fraternity's Leadership Institute, has held a number of leadership roles in the Eta Omega Chapter, and is ready for the challenge he will take on next year leading the IFC. He said, "I'm very excited to be the next IFC president, and plan to take the position to a new level!"

Epsilon Tau Chapter Wins Major Campus Award

The Epsilon Tau Chapter at Grand Valley State University recently was awarded the Chapter of Excellence Award on its campus for the 2008 academic year. The Chapter of Excellence is the top award for campus fraternities.

The award recognizes the chapter that exceeded expectations in the following micro areas:

Values Integration
Intellectual Development
Leadership Development
Positive Relationships
Outreach

In addition to the top award, the chapter was also recognized for specific achievement in Leadership Development and Outreach, and received the award for Highest New member Class GPA.

Individual brothers were recognized by campus organizations Gamma Sigma Alpha and Order of Omega for their GPAs, and Brother Branden Stewart, Grand Valley State ’07, was named Greek Man of the Year for his efforts in the chapter and for the Greek community.

Congratulations to the brothers of the Epsilon Tau Chapter for their achievements.

Delta Sig Grand Councilman Becomes President of National Association

Bruce Loewenberg, Missouri '58, became the president of the American Salers Association (ASA) at its annual meeting and banquet held during the National Western Stock Show on January 17, 2009. The ASA is the leadership voice that records, protects and promotes Salers cattle, and represents Salers breeders across the nation.

Loewenberg, who currently serves on Delta Sigma Phi's Grand Council, is a cattleman in eastern Missouri who sells Salers bulls from his ranch. He previously served in leadership roles with Maritz Corporation.

He has been an avid supporter of Missouri's academic and athletic programs since his graduation in the early 1960s, and has a strong interest in worldwide conservation efforts to protect and preserve wild tigers.

Since his initiation into Delta Sigma Phi, Loewenberg has held leadership roles and has shown his love for the Fraternity in many ways. He is a previous winner of Delta Sigma Phi's Harvey H. Hebert Memorial Award, and in 2007, provided for a generous $2 million planned gift to the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation.

Delta Sig Becomes IFC President at Georgia Tech

Andrew DeRussy, Georgia Tech ‘03, became the second Delta Sig in late 2008 to be elected IFC President on his campus, being named to the post at Georgia Tech on November 10, 2008. We recently mentioned that Patrick Sebastian, East Carolina ’06, was named IFC President on his campus as well.

For DeRussy, the first graduate student to ever be elected to serve as IFC President at Georgia Tech, running for the position was to make the IFC run more efficiently from within and to change the perception that the IFC is only in place to police and make rules. He leads a group of seven executive board members, who are responsible for managing the IFC made up of 31 national/international fraternities on campus.

“I am focusing on communication,” DeRussy said. “We are hosting President's Dinners twice a month where one IFC executive member has dinner with 3-4 chapter presidents. The 3-4 presidents are chosen based on proximity, dumpster sharing, chapter size, and cultural similarities. Through the dinners and frequent programming at our general assembly meetings, I hope to impress to the presidents that their IFC is a resource that is here to help and to promote safety.”

Prior to serving as the IFC President, DeRussy served as the president and treasurer of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Phi, as the Vice President of Administration on Georgia Tech’s IFC, and is a graduate of the Delta Sig Leadership Institute.

About his election, he said, “I am honored that other chapter presidents felt that I was the most qualified to lead them. I will be happy if and only if some positive change is made in the policies and in the perception of what IFC does for its chapters.”

In addition to serving as IFC President, DeRussy is working toward a Ph.D. in Geochemistry, which he expects to complete in 2014. He graduated from Georgia Tech with his undergraduate degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2008.

2008 Pyramid of Excellence Chapters Named

Six Delta Sigma Phi Chapters were presented with 2008 Pyramids of Excellence, the Fraternity's highest honor for a chapter, in a ceremony at The Summit on January 10, 2009.

The 2008 awards winners are:

Alpha Lambda - Millikin University
Alpha Chi - Stetson University (pictured at right)
Beta Mu - Transylvania University
Kappa Delta - Virginia Tech
Theta Chi - University of Georgia

The Pyramid of Excellence winners are chosen from the highest scoring chapters on the Fraternity's Accreditation document, which includes 26 areas of excellence. These areas of excellence include academic and personal success, membership growth and retention, advisory support and management, responsibility and accountability, campus and community involvement and leadership, Ritual, and financial management.

Each of 2008's winners received high marks in all of these areas. According to Scott Wiley, the Fraternity's Executive Director, "The six chapters that received 2008 Pyramids of Excellence are deserving winners due to their continued excellence in all areas of Fraternity management. Their hard work and dedication are helping Delta Sigma Phi continue in our efforts to become America's Leading Fraternity."

The 2009 Pyramid of Excellence awards will be presented at the Delta Sigma Phi Convention, to be held July 22-26, 2009 at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark.

Delta Sig Undergraduate Becomes IFC President at East Carolina

Delta Sigma Phi undergraduate Patrick Sebastian, East Carolina ’06, was elected IFC President on his campus on November 18, 2008.

In his role, Sebastian leads the campus’ Interfraternity Council, which consists of delegates from East Carolina’s 16 fraternities. He leads a nine member executive board, which is focused on reinstituting Greek Week, improving Junior IFC, improving recruitment, and bringing the Greek Community together as a whole.

According to Sebastian, “Right now, the Administrative VP and I are working with Panhellenic and NPHC to have a totally inclusive Greek Week that not only involves Greeks, but all ECU students. This event should be a major boost to morale and will paint a positive picture for potential new members.”

Sebastian is also involved in more than the interfraternal community. He served in student government as the freshman and sophomore class president, and was highly involved in helping his uncle run for Governor of North Carolina. In addition, has served Delta Sigma Phi’s Epsilon Phi Chapter in multiple roles; as PR Chairman his freshman year, as Treasurer his sophomore year, and currently as the chapter's social chairman.

He is excited about where the Greek Community at East Carolina can go, and wanted to be the person who led that effort, hence his reason for running. “The reason why I wanted to run for President is because the Greek system at East Carolina needed a fresh start. I ran on a back to basics message and promised to be the most accessible IFC President East Carolina has ever seen by meeting with every Fraternity and every Fraternity President on campus. Recently, the Greek System held a President's retreat in which I was invited as IFC President. We really came together and I know that all of our goals can and will be accomplished during my term and beyond.”

Sebastian will lead the IFC until November 2009, at which time he hopes that the effort put forth by him and his executive board pay off with an enhanced Greek community on his campus.

Two Months of Events Kick off This Weekend

The first of many events over the next two months for Delta Sig undergraduates and alumni takes place this weekend when the The Summit begins in Indianapolis. This marks the second year for the event, which is geared toward training undergraduate presidents and recruitment chairmen on topics related to leadership and membership recruitment.

The following three weekends will host the first three of the Fraternity's 2009 Regional Leadership Academies, annual regional events to train undergraduate leaders and alumni volunteers on chapter operations and leadership development. Click the links below to learn more about each event:

Sandwiched between the Regional Leadership Academies is the Third Annual Alumni Executive Roundtable, sponsored by the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation, which will take place from February 5-8 in Orlando, Florida. The AER provides brothers and guests an excellent opportunity to gather with brothers from a diversity of backgrounds, professions and life experiences. Attendees will enjoy a winter weekend away, and gain insight from world-class business leaders and experts in their fields - all of whom are Fraternity brothers.

Delta Sigma Phi is pleased to welcome you to the new www.deltasig.org, the Fraternity’s national web presence!

With this new iteration of the web site, Delta Sigma Phi has streamlined the site’s look, called out important administrative functions, added a search function that will allow members and guests to find what they need quickly, and provided portals for each of the Fraternity’s constituencies – actives, alumni, and visitors.

Across the top of the page, there are four tabs that direct users who looking to interact with the site in specific ways:

About features information on the organization nationally, and historical information
Locations features a map of the organization's undergraduate chapters and colonies, as well as its Alumni Associations
Giving features information on the organization’s charitable Foundation, its efforts and initiatives
Connect provides ways to connect with the organization’s leadership, and with members through its social media presences

The three tabs in the middle of the screen – Active Members, Alumni Members and Visitors – takes site guests to the portal (or microsite) of their choice, with information specific to that constituency.

The actives and alumni “microsites” include spotlights on specific members, allow members to connect with one another through social media presences of the organization, and encourage members to get involved in the activities and initiatives of the organization.

The visitors microsite provides information for parents, potential members, and other guests on the organization. It also gives general information on the organization to this constituency.

Lastly, the bottom of the screen provides frequently updated information in the Headlines, Twitter, and Upcoming Events sections.

Delta Sig Becomes All-Time Wins Leader

Joe Tiller, Montana State '63, became the all-time winningest coach for the Purdue University football program this past weekend with his team's 32-25 win this past Saturday over Central Michigan. His 85 career wins at the school surpassed the previous record of 84 held by Jack Mollenkopf from 1956-1969. Tiller has achieved his record in only 12 seasons, having started as Purdue's head coach in 1997.
