Delta Sigma Phi’s Risk and Conduct Policies serve as the Fraternity’s guidelines on risk issues, such as: alcohol and other drugs, hazing, abuse and harassment, fire, health and safety, and housing. These policies are minimum expectations of how our members should act, and they are applicable on both the chapter and individual members levels.

Delta Sigma Phi’s Risk and Conduct Policies:

Delta Sigma Phi’s Risk and Conduct Policies adhere to the FIPG Risk Management Policy with additional rules around abuse, harassment, chapter housing and member conduct. FIPG (Fraternal Information & Programming Group) is well-known throughout the fraternity and sorority community as its risk management policy has become the standard for nearly every interfraternal group. Delta Sigma Phi’s Risk and Conduct Policies can aid members and volunteers in reducing our organizational risk and keeping members safe.

Crisis Management Guidelines

Unfortunately, some dangerous and harmful incidents can occur involving brothers of Delta Sigma Phi, and at times, in chapter facilities or at chapter events. Delta Sigma Phi is not immune to the crises that have struck the college fraternity population with alarming frequency over the past years. As leaders and volunteers working with student chapters, we must be prepared to meet the needs of any crisis we face. Critical elements of our crisis management plans include teaching Risk Management and Crisis Management to our membership, having chapters complete the Responsibility and Accountability Certification Form each academic term, and identifying a leader BEFORE a problem happens. Remember, the Executive Director is the only official spokesman for the Fraternity. All media requests should be forwarded to Executive Director Phil Rodriguez at rodriguez@deltasig.org.

When to report a crisis or risk management incident:

Members of Delta Sigma Phi have a responsibility to promptly report all incidents that could result in an insurance claim or be reported in the campus or community media. When in doubt of reporting an incident, err on the side of caution and share information with the Fraternity’s volunteers and staff. Prompt reporting often can prevent minor incidents from developing into major problems. Contact the Fraternity Headquarters at accountability@deltasig.org or (317) 634-1899 to report an incident.

Alcohol Free Housing

In 2001, the Delta Sigma Phi took the bold step to initiate its Alcohol Free Housing Policy. This means that, “Alcohol may not be present at any time on a property owned, rented or otherwise used as chapter or new chapter facilities.”

Chapters interested in obtaining an exemption to this policy should work with their respective Alumni Corporation Boards to apply for a waiver. Most chapters are eligible for a waiver to the policy if they meet the following criteria:

  • The chapter participates in educational programming that reviews (a) the Delta Sigma Phi Risk Management Policy, (b) the physiological effects of alcohol use, and (c) the legal and liability issues surrounding alcohol use.
  • The chapter has exceeded the undergraduate all-men’s grade point average from the previous academic term.
  • The chapter has no IFC (or equivalent), university or Fraternity risk management violations for the previous 12 months.
  • The chapter has a zero balance due to the Headquarters at the time of application.

Sample educational programming materials and the Alcohol-Free Housing Waiver application are available in the resources section of The LAMP.

Policy Prohibiting Alcohol Above 15% ABV

Delta Sigma Phi prohibits the presence of alcohol products above 15% ABV in any chapter facility (including individuals’ rooms) or at any chapter event, except when served by a licensed third-party vendor.
